how long would it take to count your 'stache?
« on: March 05, 2018, 06:15:15 PM »
I thought this would be fun.  How long would it take to count your entire 'stache (starting from one)?
I made this calculator/app that determines how long it might take you to count to one million (mostly as an answer to my son's question about counting to large numbers).

http://engaging-data.com/count-to-one-million/
follow the directions but in step 3, click the "Other" button and type in your stache into the box.

But I realized that it would be perfect for counting out a person's networth as well (assuming your money is in a currency that has magnitudes similar to US dollars).  For example it would take me about 56 days to count our households assets!

*for those concerned about privacy, no data is transmitted to the server, all code is run locally in your browser.

On a share your badassity note, I submitted the calculator to reddit's dataisbeautiful subcategory and got about 300,000 views and it was super popular for a few days!

I saw this on reddit! Happy to be able to congratulate you on the clever idea and nice execution on a less crowded forum.

For those who haven't tried it, this isn't as simply as figuring out X seconds/number, CCCA's calculator is actually looking at the number of syllables in each number as the numbers get larger, because it takes a lot longer to say, for example, seven-hundred-fourty-two-thousands,eight-hundred-and-twenty-nine than to say one-million.

maizeman, thanks!  I enjoy looking at your graphs as well.  They have, along with others, inspired me to do some more financial related graphs/visualizations in the future.
