How long does a tank of gas last for you?
« on: April 21, 2016, 03:01:53 AM »
My car's fuel light just came on today. I filled up last on the 28th of March, and was hoping to challenge myself to make the tank last until May.

EDIT: My car's got a 44L tank. Usually it lasts me between two and four weeks.

Three and a half weeks is still a pretty good effort, especially as that included one trip of over 250km. What about everyone else? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? :)

I got to the point where the answer would have been over a year, at which point I sold my car.

Usually about a month, slightly longer in summer as fuel consumption depends on how cold the car is. A tank is about 10 UK gallons, which gets me 550-600 miles, commute is 95 miles per week. I don't pass anywhere to buy petrol on my regular journeys, so tend to fill when it's near empty.

I have a 55 litre tank that I get through every couple of months. My figures are slightly warped though due to the fact that I occasionally get a work vehicle that I don't have to buy fuel for, and obviously means I don't drive my own car.

I used to have to fill up every 3-4 days pre-MMM.  Now I'm averaging about every 2 weeks.  I still have some work to do but I'm getting there.  I have a 10 gallon tank.

Months.

I drive a gas guzzling, 14-year old Chevrolet Silverado, but I work from home, and it takes me a loooong time between fill ups, given the large gas tank and low mileage.

12 gallon tank that gets filled monthly. Actual consumption is 9-10 gallons. 8 gallons is driving to and from GFs house. 2 gallons is everything else.

I don't really track how long it lasts because it depends what I drive but I know I am averaging $84.08 a month for gas during 2016 (~$1009 for a year).  It counts 0.31 years towards fire. A V6 truck and a VW 4 bange r is my choices depending on what I am doing.

Probably about 3 weeks. I bought my car in January 2013, and have put about 26000 miles on it. Puts my average annual mileage at about 8200.

At our current rate we are only filling up maybe 3 times per year unless we take a road trip. My car has a 13 gallon tank.

When my wife and I both commuted we filled up about 3 times per month between our two vehicles.

DD sedan, 18 gal tank, ~14 days (longer in summer when driving fun car)
Fun car: 12 gal tank, ~30 days (zero gas ~Oct-~April)
Wife's SUV: 14 gal tank (pitifully small), ~5-7 days

About 2-3 weeks on a 12 gallon that both me and my wife use. We carpool on days we both work, but we do drive it 7 days a week due to mismatching days off so we carpool 3 days a week.

Not sure of tank size, maybe 14 gallons. Last 1-2 weeks, usually closer to 2, depending on errands. Now that weather is warmer I can bike for close by stuff. My car does not get good mileage, about 22 mpg.

Small 45MPG car: "10.6 gallons" (but I put in 9 max) every two weeks or so.
Big 20MPG car: "22 gallons" (but I put in 18.5 max) and varies wildly.  A tank will last anywhere from 4.5 hours (flying down the highway at 80mph on a roadtrip) to two months (off-season for my GF's photography business).

My car is a Fiat 500 with a fuel tank capacity of 35 liters or 7.7 Imperial gallons (9.2 US). Usually, I fuel up every two months. I am away for work for six weeks and only use the car when I am back for my two weeks off, but I go hiking several times a week within a 75 km radius of Calgary, which explains my high car use during those two weeks.

I guess a tank of gas would last two weeks, because dh puts half a tank in every Saturday. It's a small car, so I dunno how many gallons that is, but it was around $12 worth last weekend. LOL

He drives to work every day, we go to church twice/week, and we run some errands on the weekend. (I walk to work.)

My weekly work commute is 125 miles, I usually average another 50-100 per weekend. With an average 18-19MPG and a 16 gallon tank it's about 8-9 days.

I usually fill up before it's totally empty, so typically buy about 10 gallons each month. That's for a 2005 Ford Focus that is my daily driver for errands and getting to the YMCA on the other side of town. I walk to work.

I fill every 3 to 4 days. 6 months a year. 35 gallon tank. Generally put 28 gallons in. Lots of driving. About 310 gallons a month.
Truck gets about 15mpg.
Off months are much less, probably twice a month, maybe less.

Once a week for the fit, but my wife and I share it for commuting and it only costs $20 or so to fill.

The kid/adventuremobile once every 3-4 weeks.

2008 Prius. I have a 15-20 minute commute one way and a tank lasts me almost a month. I'm flying somewhere on business about one week a month so it's not an exact science how long I can stretch it.

I have a Ford Fusion hybrid, 13.5 gallon tank. At highway mileage, that gets us between 500 and 600 miles. If we don't go on any big road trips, it usually lasts us a month and change.

Twice a month with my Sienna during the school year (i.e., to work and back). During the summer...much less, as I pretty much only drive it on grocery errands or trips to parks with the kids.

I drive a 2005 accord 4c and I fill it about 2x per month. I commute about 30km per day total (15km each way). I hope to move closer to work once I am debt free but currently rent for very cheap.

Y'all realize gas goes bad right?  Gas which has ethanol (most gas used today is atleast 10%) will start to go bad within a month, and very bad within a few months.  Ethanol is hygroscopic, which means it pulls moisture from the air.  This will start phase separation in your fuel and that's when it gets bad.

Your vehicle will still run but not as good, and you risk causing damage.  If you don't drive much, don't fill your tank. Put what you can use up within a month.

My old lawn mower can attest to this.  Luckily for that reason and others, I dumped it for a reel mower.

I just filled up this week. Previous to that I'd last filled up in December. 4 months.

I'm FIRE though, so I am not doing the 5+ times a week work commute. When I still worked, I had to fill up approximately once every 2 weeks.

I haven't bought gas in at least a year. I drive electric (Leaf). It costs about $5/month for the electricity for all the driving I do.

It varies a little, but on average it's about 10 gallons a month (I have a 12 gallon tank, but I try to not wait until it's too close to empty when I fill).

I did the same when I found out a tank lasted me about 3 months.

56 gallons, fill every month or so but only use 40-50 gallons. In the summer if I'm riding my bike the 4.5 gal tank (typical 3.5-4 gal fillup) lasts about a week, but that's with at least half the miles being pleasure rather than regular commute or errands.

2004 Hyundai Sonata (18.5 gallon tank). I put 40$ (approx 3/4 of the tank) every 2 weeks if all I do is go to work. Summer is far less for work (bike), but more for outings (weekend camping trips) so it evens out.

I acquired my current car about 2 years ago, and the gas tank is on the opposite side from the car I owned before this one.  I buy a tank of gas so infrequently that I still pull up to the wrong side of the gas pump about half the time.

A lot of cars have an arrow near the fuel gauge that points to the side the fill spout is on. I drove rental cars for about two years while travelling a lot for work before I figured this out. The most embarrassing realizations stick the best.

I fill up my Ford Focus wagon about two times a month. Less if I ride my bicycle a few days. I've been doing that more so the fill ups are becoming less frequent. The last time I changed my oil it was more because I hadn't changed it in six months rather than there were enough miles on the odometer to necessitate the change.

I use to consume about 10 gallons a week. I lived near a lot of fast food before and found I was eating out 2 - 3 nights a week.

I have since moved 1 mile from my job. The nearest fast food place is 12 miles out (unfortunately that's also the nearest grocery). This cut my fuel consumption to 10 gallons a month. It also cut my fast food consumption down to 1 maybe 2 times a month.

All told that's close to $400 - $500 towards debt and savings now.

Yeah, I lose. I fill up weekly. 20 or 22gal tank (I forget). Almost always fill with 1/4 to 1/3 left in the tank though.

In my defense, I drive ~400mi per week for work, and am reimbursed for it.

I go through about 17 gallons of gas a month, on average (most of a tank in my minivan).

I fill up twice a month, so the car is never below half a tank. This is because this is our emergency evacuation vehicle, and the last thing I want to do is hang out in line at a gas pump (which may not be working) if we really need to get out of town pronto. We've evacuated twice due to wildfires, and not always with much warning.
