4.2 km according to Google Maps (~2.6 miles), a 40 minute walk.

To work: 40mins on the bus, with a bunch of school kids :( (6km)

Yer not supposed to ride the yellow one! ;)

Me and my wife carpool, according to google maps, 14.1 miles each way... Thankfully I have a company vehicle that pays for all gas/insurance :)

4 miles each way by bike, or I walk to the subway and then walk to the office, or some combination with buses if the weather is bad.

Mine is about 17 - 19 miles one way, depending on whether I take the car on the freeway or the bus which is more direct. Bus takes 50 minutes, and I bike an additional mile at each end - total time about 65 minutes. Car takes 35 minutes and I work 7 - 4 to avoid some of the traffic. My company subsidizes the bus pass so it costs me $19 a month for unlimited Metro LA bus trips.

My daughter is at a Cal Poly, 40 miles one way in the opposite direction to my work, but she only drives Monday morning and Friday night, and lives in the dorm mid-week. Once she graduates next summer, I plan on moving closer to work - still along the bus line, so my son can get to community college, but a more bikeable distance.

My 19 year old son rides an Italian Benotto road bike to community college and his part time job - max about 3 miles one way.

35 miles each way, over two mountains on country backroads. I generally don't have to go in every day, but the average is about four days a week.

I've lived in the city and walked to work; this is much, much better, and I don't regret it one bit. The only change I plan to make is to quit driving it when I retire.

I drive a little Kia I got for $1200 and get 35 mpg in it, a figure that's probably lower than ideal because of the mountains. When the used hybrid market gets decent I'll probably make the switch (once the Kia or its replacement is dead).

Mine is similar.  I go in 3-4 days a week.  Rarely 5.    I drive from 9000 ft elevation to 5000 ft elevation.  7 miles on an unpaved road with drop dead gorgeous views.  On Monday I saw a moose.  On Tuesday, a herd of about 50 elk.  I listen to books.   It's my alone time without the kids.  I've always enjoyed driving and I actually enjoy my commute.  Often I have no one in front or behind me until I hit the front range.   Having said that,  I would give up the commute in a heartbeat, but the only jobs up here are in casinos.  No thanks.  I'll take my commute.   I've been doing it for over 15 years.

My property taxes are crazy low due to legalized gambling down the road.  My kids go to a school with class sizes of 12, which is also highly subsidized by gambling taxes.  Frankly, It's still far cheaper than living in Boulder where I could walk/bike to work.

No moose here, but deer, foxes, and bobcats, plus many, many stupid baby bunnies this time of year, all trying to commit suicide by car. Horses and cows in the valleys. I counted cars for about a week recently; on average I see one other car per mile, usually going the other direction. I did quit counting when I dropped off the mountain into the city, but that's only a half mile from work. It's also the first section with four lanes.

I did the recorded books thing, too, until this year when my husband and I were able to carpool.

47 miles :(
I either bike or walk to the train station (2.2 mi from my house) and then take a train to work.  Very annoying commute.

13 kms each way.  There's a big hill between my home and my work, but it's about a 40 min bike ride, 25-30 mins to drive in traffic, or a ~35min public transit trip.  I bike most of the time and drive in really poor weather, or if I have errands to run right after work.  I take public transit if my wife needs our shared vehicle.

I probably have the worst commute on this whole forum :(

I make a once a week train commute between Long Island NY (where I work) and Fredericksburg, VA (where I live)- about a 6 hour door to door trip.  I do recommend train travel. At least all those hours are quiet and comfortable, and the job does have unconventional perks that make the ultra commute worth it at least for now.

2.5 miles (each way) by bike. I pull my daughter in a bike trailer for the first mile, and drop her off at daycare. Then it's another 1.5 miles to work. That segment always seems so fast without the trailer attached! All on fairly safe and flat (by Seattle standards) roads. I consider myself very lucky to count my commute as one of the best parts of my day.

My workplace has no parking and the bus route is very inefficient, so that motivates me to bike daily, whether I want to or not.

Mine is currently 15 each way.  Just bought a bike and intend to drive part of the way 4-5 miles to the bike trail and then bike 9 miles in a couple days a week.

1) Downstairs.  Say 30 feet.  70% of the time.
2) 33 miles to Portland (Maine) Jetport and from there all over US for my consulting job. 30% of the time.

By bike, mine is 11.1 km (6.9 miles) total. I also pull my daughter to daycare in a trailer for the first 3.5 km (2.2 miles), then I leave the trailer at daycare, and bike the remaining distance to work. Occasionally my husband will take our daughter to spend the day with her Babcia (grandmother), which means I can take a more direct route to work, only 7.1 km (4.4 miles) which is great!

Hey, at least your time spent commuting is 'only' 12 hours a week :)  Mine is around 3.5-4 hours a day x 5 days; I'm not sure how I've lasted this long.  All depends on how you count it, I guess.  You definitely win on distance!  Then again, it's kind of like a race to the bottom with this one, isn't it? :)

Mine takes a little under 1.5 hours each way.  Walk to train station, 45 minute train ride, walk to office.  It sounded awful at first, but I've definitely benefited from the extra walking, and I use the time on the train as my relaxing "me" time to read or work on some portable projects in peace (the train is usually very quiet and well-behaved, lots of tech workers just glued to their smartphones the whole time).  I'd love to live closer to work but this is the best option for allowing both my partner and I to avoid car commuting completely, which we consider to be a HUGE priority at the moment.

27 miles, round-trip. On the plus side, I take the bus, so that gives me 30 mins each way to catch up on my reading.

My commute to the school where I teach is 19 miles, one way.   I used to drive (face punch) because I always felt that had to bring home lessons to work on at night to be better prepared for the following day.  Now that I take public transit, my commute is hassle free and I refuse to bring home anything that I can't carry in my backpack.

My fuel expense for my SUV was averaging $300/mo.  My transit card is $70/mo.  Now I walk to the station from my house, and my school is less than 2 blocks away from the station.  My SUV is over 10 years old and I will probably buy something smaller, used and definitely more economic on fuel next year.

7 miles as the bird flies. It takes me 30-45 min with a combination of walking and train. On my way home, I usually walk 1-2 miles to a train station closer to my home in order to get exercise and enjoy the city.

I'm ashamed to admit that I drive the 3km / 2mi to work. 5 years ago I worked at the same place but lived 16km / 10mi away and managed to ride my bike then. And they call this progress...

I wish I'd never started driving. I resisted it for quite some time. Around here most people are driving at 16 or 17 but I didn't start until almost 21. I knew what a waste of money it was and didn't see how it would improve my life. It's hard not to be bitter at apparently well-meaning family and friends who pressure you into driving. I only got my licence to shut people up.

What's stopping you from biking? Just because you have a car and license doesn't mean you have to drive.

Nothing. Driving has just become habitual and easier. I'm about to make a stand though and get rid of my car.

I work for General Motors (Holden) so every day I would cop a hard time from people there who would think I was crazy to ride my bike. I was young and impressionable so I caved to peer pressure. Now I've grown a set the insults are like water off a duck's back.

We also get really cheap lease cars so I took advantage of that. I've started to wean myself off the car. On Saturday I did an 8km return bike ride to do my regular trail run that I have always driven to :-)

12 kilometers, one way. About 2 1/2 kilometers on foot and the rest on the train. Takes about an hour on good days. The commute still isn't ideal, but it's half the distance and a tenth as expensive as my May 2012 route. Moving closer to a major train line was the best decision I've made in a while.

Currently about 2.2 miles each way and I walk it everyday. I used to think that was way too far to do everyday but now it feels like nothing. So when I get back to the states I'm going to try walking my 4 mile each way commute and save on the bus pass. :)

19km each way.  3 days a week.  Its very possible to go by train, and I have done so in the past but currently teaching son to drive, so includes dropping off and usually picking up kids from school near work. In Australia learner drivers have to complete 120 hours of supervised driving, so  currently we are driving otherwise we would never get the hours. Teenagers are at time unavoidably Unmustachian, sigh!.

* 4 days/wk = 7 min walk + 50 minute express bus + 6 min walk (6+40+12 for the return);

* 1 day/wk = 56 mi drive (each way).

Car gets ~47mpg; all public transit fully subsidized.

5 miles to the day job, and another 2 miles to most of my part-time tutoring.

Lately I've been borrowing a friend's Pedelec bike to go everywhere, which is loads of fun. But once he's back in town, I'll be doing the usual: subway (30 cents) - which keeps me fit(ish) - but takes a long time, and occasional taxi rides. Taxis are sinfully cheap in Beijing but of course add up (taxis to the day job are $3.50 & tutoring are $2-3).

15miles r/t, takes 25-30min depending on wind, traffic. Work pays me $2/day as part of our Green initiative, which keeps the bike in chains & new tires ;)

I own three separate businesses.  From my front door to the first is just under 2 miles.  From my front door to business #2 is just inder 7 miles.  However, business #3 door to door is 123 miles.  I only get down there once per week.

About 50 km/day while I am at work. Ride the bus from camp to the site and back again. Provided by work, have no choice but to take it. Add another 1000 to 7000 km every 3 weeks to get home round trip, depending on what I am considering home on my days off. Company partially/completely pay the transportation cost.

6km for me, but what's really making me crazy is the fact that I must have a vehicle for use at work since I am required to drive all over the city on some days, responding to time-sensitive issues.

My commute is an hour+ each way, but it's on a private coach bus that picks me up from my house (I work at a mine). It's a tradeoff - I'm spending a lot of time commuting, but as far as commutes go it's about the easiest there is. No driving, not crowded, comfortable seats, wifi, and of course it costs me zero dollars.

In terms of "suffering" I would equate it to about a 20 minute commute by car, I'd say. I would rather have a 10 minute walk/bike/drive to work, but it sure beats 30 minutes of stress causing rush hour driving every morning

Generally about 10-12 miles in my company vehicle. Since I do onsites, it's hard to say exactly. But at least I don't pay for gas.

I'm sure mine is the less mustachian commute in the forum.
It is about 7,000 miles each way, however, it is all paid for by my company; I worry about my carbon footprint, but, then I think that, whether I'm booked or not, the flights will take off.

Just under 4 miles each way. I prefer to go home for lunch, as I have no office space or other easy place to eat a packed lunch, so I had been in the habit of biking to work in the mornings, then driving in the afternoon.  I've recently started biking back from lunch as well.  It's a bit silly, since I end up spending 2/3 of my break biking and only get 15-20 minutes to actually eat, but it fulfills my need to get out of the clinic and is extra exercise/gas money saved to boot.

I'll be moving to a new city next month and am focusing my search on places within biking distance...looks doable but the occupancy there is so high right now that decent rentals are getting snatched up before I even have a chance to go look.

My commute's not the best. About 50 miles each way. But on the bright side, it's free since my work subsidizes the pass and I've worked it out so I can count the time spent commuting as work time (free wifi on the train makes that possible).

I drive about 5 miles to work, and then walk about half a mile.  I choose to park that extra half a mile away in a public parking lot to save the $80 a month it would cost for a parking permit in the close lot.

Some day I may cross the bike barrier and just do without parking all together.

14 miles each way, 4.5 days per week.  Fortunately the gym I go to is halfway between, and it's all highway against the main flow of traffic.

About 4 miles, 8-10 minutes driving. I've looked at biking, but there are railroad tracks and a river between me and work, and the only way across is via one of two large traffic-congested bridges (and no bike lanes, of course).

I used to live much closer to work, within easy walking distance. But that was when I was young and stupid, so I drove almost every day just for the convenience of having my car with me.
