How do you spend your Sundays?
« on: May 05, 2019, 04:05:36 PM »
I love reading the New York Times's Sundays series. What does your typical Sunday look like?

Here's mine on an average Sunday:
6 AM: Wake up and slack off on the internet.
7:30 AM: Study. Right now I'm learning Estonian and practicing for programming interviews.
10:00 AM: Head to a cafe and do my weekly Estonian lesson online. Have a light breakfast (toast and coffee).
11:00 AM: Buy groceries. Either Sprouts down the street or at a farmer's market.
12:00 noon: Eat lunch. I buy tacos if I'm feeling lazy, or I cook up my farmer's market finds.
1:00 PM: Meal prep! I chop all my fruit and veggies for the week. If I have a whole chicken, I'll spatchcock and pre-season it.
2:30 PM: Throw away old food and clean the kitchen.
3:00 PM: Exercise. I'll either go for a hike in a regional park with my husband and the dog, or I head to the climbing gym.
5:30 PM: Make dinner. This is either a one-pot meal (like soup) that we can eat throughout the week, or leftovers.
7:00 PM: More studying. I like using ankiweb to make Estonian flashcards I can study on my phone.
8:00 PM: Brain switches off. I start thinking about Game of Thrones.
9:00 PM: If I'm being good, I'm in bed. But I might be watching Game of Thrones.

Generally, Saturday is errands and Sunday is church and puttering around.

Today we’ve done laundry and gardening and taken a walk.

Winter:
wake up at 9am
Watch CBS Sunday morning
10:30 watch political and news shows
Noon - midnight watch college basketball and Netflix.  Eat lots of food and drink wine.

Non winter:
Wake up at 8am
Watch CBS and news shows
Noon - go to western MI beaches or other area hiking

I should go to church more.  I work at a Christian university and just go during the week sometimes.  I don’t believe the whole Sunday day of obligation thing so much.

Sundays are usually pretty chill for us. We generally try to get all our work done on Saturday, then just spend Sunday fucking around and doing fun stuff. If we're going to socialize, it's usually on a Sunday. My partner also has a weekly Sunday D&D group.

Today we slept in until about nine, had breakfast, and biked out to the next city over for a local Mustachian meetup for several hours. Now my partner's gone to his weekly group, and I'm going to play video games for most of the evening. Cooking, cleaning, laundry, and errands for the week were done on Friday evening and yesterday, so we're all set for everything now.

Sunday is a Work day like every other. Just housework instead of salaried work.
I get a laugh out of the thought of reading the paper. People have 2 hours to do that?  Every now and then might squeeze in some Netflix show or movie on a Sunday. But that’s unusual.

Sometimes home projects
Sometimes groceries
Sometimes laundry
Sometimes mowing
Some computer time for email, educational, research, news, MMM, etc.
Usually relaxing with a TV show, maybe a movie if I have the time

Usually husband and I sleep in a bit (the cat allowed us to sleep until 8:45 this morning) since even though he usually has to work (retail manager), his store doesn’t open until noon.

Once up, we drink coffee and read news, maybe cook brunch if we’re feeling inspired. He usually works and while he’s gone, I either spend time with my mom or friends, take care of things around the house, or catch up on work if needed (I’m a freelancer).

Husband gets home fairly early, so we usually have a good dinner and maybe do something fun. Last weekend, we saw the Avengers movie with friends. Today, we took a long nature walk in a local park with hiking trails.

Not sure there's typical, but here's yesterday:

+ Slept in late
+ Lazed around in bed for a bit reading a few chapters of a good book
+ Smoothie for breakfast
+ It was a nice day, so decided to do a leisurely walk of the 4 miles from my house to a nice downtown area.  Walk involved lots of stopping to enjoy beautiful flowering trees, hang out in a park for a bit enjoying the weather, and have an ice cream.
+ Explored downtown area for a bit, then took public transportation back home
+ Went back out to pick up take-out from my favorite Mexican restaurant and the makings for margaritas
+ Had tasty Mexican food and margaritas outside on the patio.  Happy Cinco de Mayo!
+ Read for a bit more outside on the patio, enjoying the weather some more
+ Bedtime

my saturday/sunday are actually Thursday/friday, but I have pretty much the same routine every week. I do my groceries on my "Saturday" and then meal prep on Sunday.

- Wake up around 6:00
- loaf around with coffee and the internet till about 7:30
- do something active until about 10:00, maybe work on my bike, do some PT exercises
- "clean" which usually means watching youtube and maybe loading the dishwasher
- procrastinate meal prepping...until 4:00
- mad dash to cook everything for the week from 4:00-7:00.
- sit on porch, listen to music, read a book until the sun goes away
- pretend I'm going to go to sleep early (9:00) but really read until 10:30

Typical for me is church and family time.  We usually throw in some Football, TV, or relaxing as well.  Most of the time my mother in law fixes a very good Sunday dinner which is nice.

Yesterday I had to work 13 hours which was not nearly as nice.

6/7am - wake up. I follow European soccer ball, so will tune into a match while making coffee & oatmeal

9am - The local brewery does a two-ish hour bike ride that ends with bagels and beer back at the bar. Great way to get the day going

Noon - early afternoon - maybe some mindless chores. Put headphones on and rock out to some laundry, dishes, etc

with a light dusting of: groceries, chill, read, online classes, make food, watch tv

6 am - 6:30 am (usually): wake up, bathroom, brush teeth, bum around on internet
7 am : eat breakfast, maybe prep some fruit
8 am: meet bestie at the gym for hour long gab session
9:15 am: try to pull myself away because she's usually not done talking
9:30 am: get home and finish prep for neighborhood brunch potluck
10 am - 11:30 am: neighborhood potluck at the park
11:30 am - 1 pm: cleanup the dishes from the potluck.  Fold laundry.  Maybe do a little sewing.  Computer stuff.  Shower maybe.
1 pm - 3 pm (ish): more chores, some food prep, play a game with the kid?  Feed the kids because they are suddenly starving.
3 pm: drop big kid off at orchestra practice, take little kid to pool (we usually split these duties).  At the pool for about an hour total, usually 30 min actually swimming with six year old.
4-6 pm: cook dinner, more chores.  (Meal prep happens on weekend, and harder recipes.  It's not uncommon for me to make 6-8 different things on the weekend, including dessert, something for the potluck like muffins, salad dressing, casserole, washing lettuce, etc.)

6- 7 pm dinner
7 pm - 8:30 pm: dishes, get ready for bed, lay out clothing for next morning (gym), make sure big kid finished his homework and takes a shower, more laundry folding (at least hubs washes it).  Watch a little TV, maybe play a game.
8:30: read for 10-15 min and pass out.  Hubby puts the kids to bed

Lots and lots and lots of dishes...

A fairly typical representation:

 + Wake up (around 7:30)
 + Eat breakfast
+ Hang out reading (me) watching TV/playing computer games/updating Quicken data (husband)
+ Make a grocery list and plan meals for the week
 + Grocery shopping
 + Eat lunch
+ Spend 3+ hours making lunches and dinners for the week, chopping up veggies for snacks, and other meal prep (my husband helps with some of the prep before heading outside to mow & fertilize the lawn)
+ Throw in loads of laundry and fold clothes in between meal prep steps
 + Clean up kitchen
+ Take a walk with my husband around the neighborhood
+ Head to 4 PM workout class
+ Quick clean up after the gym before my husband I head to the local brewery to have a beer and play cribbage (sometimes play at home if we already did a lot of eating out or drinking during the week)
+ Home to watch a movie or TV show
 + Bed

I'm probably a bit an outlier. My typical Sunday routine

4am : wake up (I always get up at 4am every single day - I know )
4am - 7am : Read NY Times, Washington Post, New Yorker, Vanity Fare, Ars Technica, Hacker News, Reddit
7am - 8am : workout in the gym (my gym opens at 5am on weekdays. I have to wait until 7 on Sundays)
8am - 8:30 : shower and breakfast
8:30 - noon: Study math/computer science/computational linguistics (catching up on conference papers and new research)
Noon : lunch
After lunch - help older daughter (sophomore in college) with computer science homework, work on my model train layout, or electronics hobby stuff
6pm dinner
After dinner: Read lighter books or watch math channels on YouTube
Bedtime is 8pm  (I know)

I have to add - I've been an early riser since childhood and no matter what, I can't stay in bed beyond 5am.

Sunday is my lazy day where if I don't feel like having any structure or plans, I don't have to.  I usually find productive things to do anyway, but it's good to know that if I want to lay face down on the floor in my underwear for 12 hours I am allowed to.

This past Sunday we had six baseball games between our two boys. So....that's what we did. Up at 5am. Dog walk. Baseball all day....more dog walk. Sleep.

It's not for everyone but there's nothing we'd rather be doing except perhaps squeezing in a workout!

Highly variable. This past weekend I was exhausted (emotionally which finally spilled into physically), so aside from bare minimum of errands, cooking, yardwork, and cat care, I sat on the couch and watched 3.75 seasons of Star Wars Rebels. I have many projects I am working on or need to work on, but I also need to take care of myself.

@determinedcat Your day sounds lovely!

@OtherJen At first glance, I imagined your cat wearing a tie and managing a store. For what it's worth, I think that cats would make terrible retail managers, as they'd spend the day knocking things off of shelves and showing customers their butts.

Thanks, this image made me choke on my coffee! :D

Home to prep meals for the week using all the food we bought at Costco on Saturday

Usually sleep late in until maybe 7AM
Coffee and reading until 9AM
Quick breakfast usually 3 eggs
Hit the gym with my gal around 10:30, get a solid workout in.
Come home, shower, love making, shower
Brunch/lunch
About 2 pm load a cooler and hop on the boat
2-4 do a couple sets of wakesurfing
4-6/7 if its really nice hit the sandbar for sun and games with friends
Wrap things up with a pizza from our favorite spot and watch GOT
...its a nice little Sunday : )

Boats = hands down the best unnecessary money I've ever spent (contrary to popular belief) but it does only represent only 0.008% of my net worth so not an extravagance by any means.

Up around 7-7:30.

Husband has breakfast, We sit in our sunroom and read the paper, etc. Usually just chill, do little housework jobs like toss in a load of laundry, until noon or so.

In warm months: walk somewhere for lunch, or to do an errand, or just to walk. We tend to try to combine an errand with a fun activity, so go to the hardware store followed by lunch, or go walk around or bike in a neighborhood we like or go out and take a hike, followed by picking up milk on the way home.

Then, chill in the backyard, dinner, maybe a movie.

In colder months: similar but with more cocooning and indoor activities.

We're up pretty early on Sundays.
Make up our grocery list and go to the store.  Come home and eat pancakes/drink coffee.
In the warm months we go for a bike ride or go for a walk - maybe run an errand.
Do a quick clean of the house - wiping down kitchen and vacuuming.
Make lunch.  Just relax in the afternoon
My husband usually cooks something Sunday afternoon that we put into the fridge or freezer for later in the week.
Sunday evenings - relax.

I sleep in, have a leisurely coffee, read, exercise, have breakfast, and then just relax until our kids and grandkids come over for family dinner. We have a blast, hanging out, playing games and eating the great food that my husband cooks.
This is now my favorite evening of the week. Sundays used to be depressing, with my mind preoccupied with work stress and negative anticipation about the week ahead, to the point where I wasn’t properly enjoying family time.
But FIRE-ing 6 months ago changed all that. Best decision ever!

Sleep late
Mass at 10:30
Socializing with friends in the church basement after mass till 12:30 or 1:00
During football season we go to Grandma's to watch the game if the Skins are playing, and stay for dinner
Otherwise the younger kids usually hang out with friends (they have a swing dance club that meets on alternate weeks) while DH and I do some gardening, crosswords, homebrewing, other projects. Often the grown kids and grandkids come over for dinner.
If I didn't prep the homeschool schedule for the coming week on Saturday, I do that after dinner.
