I’m a headhunter. Confidential searches can be tricky, because no matter what, your resume will get out to someone.
If you really want to be as careful as possible do NOT apply through any job boards. They will have your info and can become searchable. If you do have interest in a role that is posted, contact the company directly, by phone, before giving them any of your information. Try to talk only to the hiring manager, because HR can get “gossipy.”
Contact a few recruiters in your industry, probably through LinkedIn messages or connect with them with a brief intro message. Try to find executive recruiters that are used to confidential searches. Tell them your situation. They will be able to “sell” your background to their clients with redacted info from your resume, or no resume at all.
What this all comes down to is you have plausible deniability that you aren’t “looking” for a job. Oh that recruiter that called the company on my behalf? I never authorized them to do that! They must have taken my info from my LinkedIn page! Headhunters get paid to be the scape goats. We’re always at fault when something goes wrong, because we should always take the fall for our clients.
