How do one live mustachian?
« on: September 26, 2015, 01:47:03 PM »
I have accumulated what in my mind I believe is a nice pile though I still have 10 to 12 years to go before reaching even the most basic of financial independence.

However, I do not think I want to reach financial independence by the extreme saving method. I rather brake free from the corporate world by becoming a lifestyle entrepreneur. Working with whatever I am passionate about. Which in this moment is the Japanese culture and language. I even started a website in order to share my passion with the world( http://www.japanicate.com ).

So, I am thinking of taking 20% of my current stash and spending it on my passion, a three month trip to Japan. These kind of ventures are not easily doable unless one can earn enough to live off one business or at times of unemployment.

What does the mustachian life philosophy recommend? Should one live in the present or should one forego everything in order to save save save?

Well, I would lean towards the latter (save save), but lots of people pull off what you are talking about. Like people who do travel blogs and travel full time. For me, I don't want to hustle that hard. I would rather coast to FI in a 9-5. There is also a hybrid option where you save and then get halfway to FI and then you just need to come up with half of your expenses.

"Foregoing everything" is definitely not part of Mustachian life philosophy.  The correct approach (IMHO, of course) is to practice frugality without sacrifice.  You don't do without... you do instead.  And you get very clear about your life priorities (present and future).

Good luck.
