how do I wire this thermostat?
« on: May 12, 2024, 01:32:31 PM »
I bought a new thermostat and I can't get it wired properly.

When I took the old thermostat (Carrier) off the wall I saw the wiring. See photo. The terminals are labeled A, B, C, and D.

The new base plate (Honeywell) is labeled G, Y, W, and R.

I thought G was for green, Y for yellow, W for white, and R for Red. But when I hooked them up that way it didn't work.

Anyone have any ideas?

Is the old one an Infinity?  Contractor chats say ABCD is a communicating thermostat.  You need to rewire both ends to work.  You will also lose some efficiency by not using a communicating thermostat.

One example: https://www.justanswer.com/hvac/hlkbx-re-wired-carrier-system-abcd-terminals-rwygc.html

Down the Google rabbit hole: "carrier abcd to honeywell thermostat wiring"

Oh, so this is a completely different type of controller. I may not be able to switch them out. Bummer. Oh well, thanks for the help!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
