How did you first find MMM?
« on: February 29, 2012, 06:02:49 PM »
I have noticed in the comments on the blog (and on the ERE forums) that many of us, like myself, started following MMM way back when he had his first guest post on ERE.
It has since grown from a couple dozen loyal readers to a small movement!

I'm always curios how that happens.
How did you end up here?

I learned about MMM from his guest post on ERE. If it weren't for that guest post, I probably wouldn't have discovered this community until Jacob's final "passing of the torch" post. If it weren't for the ERE connection, I probably never would have found MMM's site - I rarely if ever update my blog subscriptions...

Guest post as well.  Saw it back last May or whatever it was, and within a day or two had gone back and read every post up to that point, and been hooked on the 'stache ever since.

You know, it's the funniest thing, I honestly can't remember. This is the first FI blog I started reading. I was probably googling stuff about personal finance and retirement planning. This site blew my mind.

I came from ERE. What's weird is that I was Googling savings/money management techniques one day and came across the ERE site. I literally spent 3 minutes there. I saw the reference to MMM, got curious about the name and clicked. It only took 5 minutes of reading the blog for me bookmark it and subscribe. I've actually never really read anything on the ERE site but I did get here from there.

Ah yeah, I did see it on Lifehacker a bit after I came over from ERE, so I'd have possibly ended up here anyways.

I have been checking in at Get Rich Slowly for a long time now.  On my most recent visit I read a cool article about JD's frugal active retiree neighbor.  Then I found a link to ERE and MMM in the comments.  Glad I followed the links.

Interestingly I found out about MMM from a link posted in an off topic post on an automotive forum. It linked to one of MMMs posts about purchasing forclosed properties for rental income.

Co-incidentally, a lot of stuff happenend around the same time (within a two month span) that all gelled together:

-I have always been somewhat frugal, but last year my girlfriend lost her job so we had to figure out ways to stretch our money further (thankfully she has found a new and better job since then).
-Then a guy at work that reports to me introduced me to Rich Dad, Poor Dad which I read and found to be quite insprational although also very flawed. This guy also gave me a lot of other books he downloaded on personal improvement and financial planning. He resigned about two weeks later to do business on his own.
-On the same automotive website I mentioned, there was a long thread mainly focusing on the evils of credit cards and debt in general. It got me to thinking a lot about my mortgage. A poster posted a link to his ftp site that had a lot of financial planning books that I downloded.
- Then there was the real estate thread that got me hooked to MMM and form there I linked to ERE. MMM is more my speed than ERE however.

My mortgage is split into two parts one at a 14% interest rate and one at a 7% interest rate (I live outside the US). My goal now is to pay off the 14% loan by the end of this year and try to pay off the other part as soon as possible after. I am also concentrating more effort on growing my side business. Resigning my job and achieving FI is a long way off for me. However if I can clear of my mortgage I will feel a lot more comfortable taking the risk of resigning my job and concentrating on my business full time.

I found MMM through ERE when Jacob passed the torch. In turn, I found ERE in the John Robb's blog comments section, a resilient communities' aficionado and warfare specialist.

I was reading something about retiring early on another blog and one commenter's advice was something like, "Step 1: follow the advice of Mr. Money Mustache, Step 2: there is no step 2".  I just had to check it out and am glad I did.

I think that was one of the comments on a recent Get Rich Slowly ask the readers.  If so, that means you're pretty new here.

Welcome!  Glad to have you.

MMM has some great content in the archives.  I recommend starting at the beginning and reading all the way through, but if that's too daunting, the "random" button on the top of the blog will randomly serve up a blog post from the past and is a great way to dabble in some old posts.

I stumbled upon ERE and in the midst of reading numerous journals on Jacob's forum, I noticed that many posters were mentioning "MMM".  I had to know what this was, so I googled "MMM", found this site, and proceeded to read each and every post and comment from the beginning.  I have been hooked ever since that day.  Thank you for your excellent, extremely well-written blog.

I stumbled upon Get Rich Slowly, he had a guest link to ERE and when Jacob went back to work, he passed the mantel to MMM. From there I've been reading this blog and BNL. MMM is my favorite, but I still check the others every couple of days.

This guy is a high-income earner who burned everything he had to destroy his Harvard MBA debt of $100+k in 10 months. Spoiler: he just did it, a few months ahead of schedule.

I had been reading Get Rich Slowly for a couple years, but hadn't read it in a while until I noticed  that he had an article about how he sold the site a while back. He talked about achieving FI and it started a debate in the comments section about some good websites about FIRE. Several different people mentioned good old Triple M so I checked it out, and I've been hooked ever since. I read all the articles in a couple of weeks and am just discovering the forums and starting on the reading list. I'm almost finished with the first book, Your Money or Your Life.  Absolutely great book, basically reinforces everything on here, with more specific roadmap on how to reach FI.

I saw the Lifehacker article about the commute in October. I was thinking "these numbers look ridiculous, this guy's full of shit".
And then I read the blog post, and the rest is history.

Me too! In fact, I shared that article from Lifehacker with a co-worker. About 1 week later, she mentioned MMM and I had no idea what she was talking about, so she told me about this blog that Lifehacker's story I'd sent her had used as reference and that she'd read every post in that week's time. That same day I started doing the same and now it's easily my most read financial blog (it was also my first!). We also started carpooling a week or so after that. MMM literally changed my daily life in just a few short weeks!

Can't really remember exactly, but it was very early days. Did you perhaps post a comment on The Art of Manliness Blog? Something about mustaches?? One of these days I''ll step into the wayback machine to see if I can recognize the first post I read, but there's so much great stuff being posted lately, who has time? You rock, MMM!

I read a blog called Down to Earth, which is a  simple living blog - someone in the comments one day  mentioned ERE and I was intrigued and checked it out.  My eyes were opened and I avidly read the whole blog and felt a weight lift from my shoulders. It was just after Jacob posted his goodbye post Dec 2011, and I then checked out MMM on his recommendation. And have been a regular reader since, but only just started posting.

I should have left this an open ended poll!
I didn't realize it was an option at the time.

By "open ended" I assume you mean no deadline, keep it running?  If so, I went ahead and changed that.

:D

I've been using this username since about 1996 on various forums and other places, so I've had lots of enjoyment from reactions like these.  Many a smacked forehead when at a meetup and mention my username out loud and it clicks for someone who I am.

It's the tendency to read the first three letters as the word "are" that trips people up.

It was one of my co-workers. At lunch one day he started talking about, I don't know, how we should pay off all our debt as soon as possible or somesuch. Whatever it was, my preconceived notions were challenged and I called bullshit. Later I read MMM's post on hedonic adaptation and I knew I had found my calling.
