We had designed our moissanite engagement ring together and were planning on waiting for it to arrive (I think it was about 3 weeks in total) before getting officially engaged.
However, we were at her favorite spot in the world - cabin on the lake she went to frequently as a kid - and were standing down on the dock. It was beautifully calm, lightly raining, occasionally lightning/thunder in the distance, we were by ourselves... I was thinking to myself how I wished we had not decided to wait for the ring to come before getting engaged because this was a PERFECT time.
One thing we often do is ask each other what we are thinking since we're both introspective folks. In light of the above I was pondering "I want to ask you to marry me right now" which let me tell you is an awkward thing to be thinking about when that person asks, "what are you thinking?" We ended up having a meta discussion about whether we could be engaged without a ring, since we had previously decided not to, but she ended up saying something like "I want it to happen however you want." So that was that, I asked her a lot of times since I rather enjoyed hearing her say "yes."
It was funny since we spent so much time planning everything out, how it would all work, timelines, etc and then spontaneously got engaged anyways :)
But one of the best parts is during this time we were coordinating with her family for dinner shortly after that and so in the crazy "ahh we just got engaged!" conversation we had we got constant texts/calls from them. It was hilarious watching my fiance-of-5-minutes try to have a boring logistics conversation with her mom when she JUST GOT ENGAGED and not telling them since we were going to see them in person only 30 minutes later.
