Honda Fit vs Honda HR-V?
« on: March 19, 2016, 01:02:26 PM »
I'm planning to buy a new car sometime in the next year. I recently sold my 1977 Diesel Benz and I've decided that I want a modern vehicle. I'm going carless, only biking, and doing research in the meantime.

I've narrowed it down to either a Honda Fit (2015 used or new 2015/2016) or a Honda HR-V (they just started producing them in 2016)

I bike commute, so I won't be putting a ton of miles on it, but I do have to travel (driving) 2-4 hours for work occasionally. I'm also an avid hiker/outdoor enthusiast, so I would love to have the room in the HR-V and the AWD drive model is really appealing (though I don't know if I can justify that expense since I don't live where it snows or anything!)

I want to keep this car for the next 15+years, and planning on starting a family, have dogs, etc, so the slightly larger size of the HR-V is appealing--but I'm not sure the additional $2-4K is worth it. The Fit also has better MPG, but not nearly as much better as you'd think--The HR-V still gets 30 MPG and lots of people have reported in the 40s.

I know there are lots of Fit fans here. Anyone have experience with the HR-V or see the advantage of Fit vs HR-V?

I would absolutely look at a used Fit. Even if you're looking at 2015 MY, you're already avoiding the biggest drp in depreciation. In addition to all the things you mention (fuel economy, cheaper), the Fit has nearly the same amount of interior cargo space as the HR-V in a more efficient design. The idea of the compact CUV (HR-V, Mazda CX3, Buick Encore, Etc.) is terrible because they're compromises all around, basically they're heavier hatchbacks that have a little extra ground clearance.

Get the Fit.

A good comparison. You don't get much for your $3000-5000 additional cost (even more with AWD.)

If that sum of money won't affect your FIRE date (i.e. you put more than that in savings each month and have no debt and will be paying cash) and you just "like" the HR-V more, no big deal, but it's not the most optimal/efficient choice.

I love my fit. I've been amazed at the space it has. It's much bigger than it looks with the way the seats fold away. I have to agree that spending the extra for a car you won't use that much is not worth it. We did a 2 month camping road trip in the fit and everything fit (pun intended) without blocking visibility out of any window.

Agree that the Fit would probably be quite adequate. Here are some feats we have accomplished in it:

1. Moving overstuffed chair.
2. Moving DINING ROOM TABLE AND SIX CHAIRS (yes, all at once. Mr. FP had forgotten to leave the children's car seats at home, so they were loose in the car, too).
3. 2 kids in car seats plus 1 adult human in the backseat.

The only thing that was tricky, but not impossible, was getting the tandem stroller in the back. A side-by-side double might have fit better. The tandem stroller fit better in the trunk of my late 90s Accord.
