Holy Cow! The $50 T-shirt
« on: June 12, 2015, 04:17:17 AM »
So, as his birthday present, i took my youngest to an arena gig to see his absolute fave singer .. one Arianne Grande. (for those of you who dont know her she's a disney star turned pop singer ...... imagine the musical equivalent of root canal and you get the idea).

The tickets were ridiculously expensive but better spent on an experience that he wants more than anything rather than another peice of useless crap for his room! I had warned him that my wallet would be remaining shut whilst we were there as the merchandise was expensive.

This didnt stop us pausing at the merchandising stand where about the cheapest thing we saw was an Arianne branded T-Shirt which cost......£35!!! ($50ish).    £35!!!!!!!   for a T-shirt.

Is it just me??

It's not just you: that's a lot of money for a memento.

Then again, the shirts a teen would be buying regularly go for $30 bucks so in 'perspective', it's about what the market will bear.

Kudos on not buying six of them. My teen self would have argued big time that I should get one for me and one for my absent friends...

The current state of the music industry means that the bulk of an artist's* income is through merchandising. People don't buy the music as often it's available for free on streaming and a significant amount of the money from ticket sales goes to the venue.

I'm not condoning the cost, but I am at least not surprised. For non self-made performers it's more about selling the brand than the music.

*read into "artist" what you will.

Fifty bucks would probably cover half of what I normally spend for clothing in a whole year. I just don't want/need much in the way of garments.  My most frequent purchases are underwear and socks because all my physical activities really wear them out fast!

I go to a few local metal shows for smaller bands around here. Expensive 'merch' is basically how they survive.

Now, the bigger artists probably don't need the help...

My wife used to own a men and women's consignment store, taking only high end designer clothes. Many consignors would regularly bring in T-Shirts worth over $200 retail, and sometimes much more for some very specific brands like Prada, Dior, Boss, Hermès, Helmut Lang and the likes. These Ts were for the most part made of cotton! My favourite consignor was a professional hockey player who was the same size as me and who only consigned because he didn't want to throw his seasonal wardrobe away (he would come every season with his entire wardrobe to make room for his new acquisitions) and couldn't care less whether his stuff would sell and at what price, and when they didn't at the end of the consignment period, he would just tell her to keep whatever she wanted. I now have a nice collection of high end designer shirts, sweaters, suits, and everything in between. Unfortunately, my free clothing pipeline is now closed since she sold the store last year.

I haven't spent money on clothes in 3 years. But now my jeans are getting holes from all my bike riding, so I'll have to restore parts of my wardrobe soon. Ever since my sizes stopped changing as a teen I just restock clothing every few years or so as I wear through it and never spend more than $100 to do so. It blows my mind the amount of money people dump into their wardrobes.

We were at the Vanity Fair outlet last night and saw many nice t-shirts with popular logos for $15 and under.  Lee and Wrangler jeans are often to be found under $10 a pair.  No department store jeans for us.  Hub especially likes to find 'irregular' $5-$6 jeans that he wears while performing manual labor around the 'estate.'

Well, I should have explained that practically ALL my clothing I get using leveraged gift cards (Land's End, Sears, L.L. Bean) that I have obtained with cash reward points.  So... very little of my earned cash ever leaves my wallet in exchange for garments.  Except the occasional find in a Goodwill or other thrift store.
