help me curate FIRE podcast list
« on: April 13, 2018, 05:03:04 PM »
Hi everyone

I have a friend who I want to introduce to the FIRE concept, and I plan to do it through podcasts.

I want to curate a playlist so that by the time she finishes listening to them all, she's hooked.

Does anyone have any particular podcasts (ideally episodes rather than channels) that they think would be particularly good for this purpose?

Was there a podcast for you where it all just 'clicked'?

If she has any debt (including mortgage), I would start her out on Dave Ramsey.  I'll leave the work of choosing the episodes to you ;-)

I don't know if my current favorite podcasts would appeal to a beginner, but I love
Financial Samurai
Radical Personal Finance

I can't stand Suze Orman, btw.  And I'm a gal.

Financial Samurai is not for beginners. He has a high net worth and high passive income. Radical Personal Finance is not bad but the guy seems like he likes to hear himself talk and everything is viewed thru the lens of his Christian faith. I ditched that one quick.

Suggest The Financial Independence Podcast by the MadFIentist. His website is a super useful tool. Has fewer posts by when Brandon (MadFientist) posts something it's meaningful. Also ChooseFI which is newer. These guys spend a lot of time repeating themselves and being preachy but it's not a bad place. Also like Afford Anything with Paula Pant. She has a real estate bend but interviews lots of good guests.

So I haven't listened to these particular episodes in a while.

But I remember feeling particularly inspired after the Millionaire Teacher episodes. Paula is an amazing interviewer. Andrew Hallam will feel pretty extreme, however, as someone with an average household income I felt like ER was entirely possible, and completely within my control.

If your friend is an analytical/process type this interview with Joshua Sheets may appeal to that side. With Paula again, bonus!

Stacking Benjamins is always light and funny while covering money concepts you could learn if you're not careful enough. This episode has the Mad Fientist on, so the combo is magical.

Give me an angle that may work well for your friend. What is going to appeal?

I second everything Grande said.
