I was just in Guatemala for a month but did not get to Belize.  One of my friends went there with her husband a year ago, and they had an amazing time visiting a wide variety of places within Belize.  I'm sorry I can't remember the details of what she told me, but I remember her loving the Mayan ruins.  (The ones I saw not too far away in Guatemala, Tikal, were awesome.)  Here's a good site to give you some leads:  http://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-guides/belize-travel-tips/  Have an amazing time!

Cave tour where you hike up underground stream to sacred cave.  Not to be missed if you head inland.

Ill second this. Actun Tunichil Muknal. Just dont tell anyone else, ok?
Caye Caulker with daily snorkeling trips
I would avoid Ambergris (too touristy) and Belize City

I spent a week in Belize this winter, split my time between inland (San Ignacio) and coastal (Caye Caulker). I second the recommendation for the Mayan ceremonial cave - that was hands down one of the coolest things I've done in my entire life. They call it the ATM cave and you need to go as part of a guided tour, there are many of them that leave daily from San Ignacio. Lots and lots of other Mayan stuff to see in that area, including Caracol and Xunantunich, which was an easy trip from San Ignacio and very rewarding. . If I had been there a little longer I would have taken a day trip up to Tikal, technically in Guatemala, but actually easier to reach from Belize. I took the bus from San Ignacio to Belize City, then caught a water taxi to Caye Caulker. The same water taxi goes to the more popular Ambergris Caye, but Caulker is smaller, less developed, and much more laid back. Suuuper relaxing. Also amazing snorkeling in the area, one of the best coral reefs in the world. I loved everything I did in Belize, and would love to go back.

Tikal. Stunning, awe inspiring piece of the human legacy. Don't miss it.
Try to spend a night or two on one of the atoll islands. Glover's Reef, for example.
Here's a tour company we used. It was awesome and reasonably priced. Even if you don't use them, you can get an idea of places/sights/etc.

I just returned from Belize a few weeks ago.

We spent a few days in San Ignacio (inland, near the Guatemala border) and then the rest in San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye.

Near San Ignacio we visited the Xunantunich Mayan ruins, did some kayaking, and then visited the ATM cave that PizzaSteve mentioned. All were awesome (partially because for the first 2 we had an amazing guide to ourselves), but the ATM cave was something special. You can do a Tikal day trip but we didn't. San Ignacio is a fun town and I wish we'd stayed another day.

In San Pedro we mostly dove in the mornings and ate/drank the rest of the day. Didn't do the Blue Hole because it was such a long trip out there and back. The nearby reef (including the Hol Chan Nature Reserve) was plenty cool for me. San Pedro, and the rest of Ambergris, is really touristy but mostly in a fun way.

Belize is really cool. The people are absurdly nice, in a genuine way. It's not cheap by Central American standards but cheap enough.

Tips:
- If you do snorkel Shark Ray Alley try to be the first person off the boat. The nurse sharks don't stick around long once they realized they're not getting fed.
- In San Pedro eat at the Hungry Grouper and get the blackened fish. So amazing we went back 3 nights later.

I have never been there, but it's a famous destination for fly fishing.  "Flats" fishing - you'd be in the shallow salt water less than waist deep.  If you're interested, I'm sure you can find/hire a guide a day before going (unless it happens to be peak season for fisherman, but I have no idea if there is a peak season there.)  Flats fishing is pretty fun/exciting if you've got the casting skill for it, as you're fishing to fish that you can see.  If you don't have the skill, I'm not sure that it would be much fun, it still might be.

We spent a month there, umm, 12 years ago, holy moly. We are the type to stay away from resorts and super touristy spots, like Ambergris. Went to Caulker at the end of our trip and it felt really crowded.

Tobacco Caye...staying on a tiny island on the reef is very cool. OK snorkeling, it was better at South Water Caye. Ask for a boat ride from one of the locals.

Hopkins...really neat Garifuna town with lots of history and manatees in the bay. Check out the drumming center and see if there's still the lady who has traditoonal dinners in her home.

Placencia...at the end of a long peninsula that was being developed with shrimp farms and resorts when we were there. Lots of lodging opportunities. Snorkeling out on the reef is absolutely great, but you need to go on a tour to get there. Tours to Monkey River are great to check out howler monkeys.

Inland, the little zoo and associated lodging was great. Caves Branch is a little canoe into a cave deal; we also loved the swimming hole and the bar with Belikin Dark on tap. Mmmmm, beer.

San Ignacio is an interesting town with a big market. We stayed at Trek Stop, which is just acrosz the river from Xunantunich (pronounced 'shoe-non-too-neetch'; xu =sh. I'd love a t-shirt that says Xit Happens).

Check out the mountain pine forest area...totally different ecosystem. Caracol is a very large Mayan site, similar to Tikal, but without the trip to Guatemala.

We loved the cultural diversity of Belize along with the biological diversity. Definitely one of my favorite trips ever. If we go back, I really want to get out to Glover's Reef and snorkel with whale sharks.

Now, go eat some fry jacks for me and be sure to try all the colors of Marie Sharps hot sauce!

We stayed on Caye Caulker for a week last year. It's a beautiful, less developed and very relaxed island. The whole island looks like a post card. The snorkeling here was amazing, we went with Raggamuffin tours and they were excellent and very knowledgeable (and provided plenty of rum punch on the ride back to the island) -- I'd highly recommend them. One slightly odd (to me) thing I noticed was how few people actually swam in the ocean off the beaches. Lots of sunbathing and reading/drinking by the water, but almost no one actually in the water unless they were actively snorkeling, kayaking, etc. If you visit here, rent a bike. They don't allow cars on the island so people tend to rent bikes or golf carts to get around. The locals were very friendly. This was a great place to vacation.

Belize is a lawless country with one of the highest murder rates in central America.

http://globalnews.ca/news/3420875/canadian-found-dead-heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-travel-to-belize/

You could say similar about the US and gun crime. Just be aware of your surroundings and watch your back. Don't get murdered.

We used Airbnb. We did have some problems with the accommodations this way but the owners always attempted to make it right.

Belize City is to fly into, then get out as quickly as possible.

Loved Garifuna food.

Caye Caulker was laid back. Cheap good food. They were rebuilding the Split when we were there in January due to hurricane, so it should be a little nicer by now. Unfortunately it's not lobster season until June.

Enjoyed the snorkel tour- try to go with a reputable agent in a small group who doesn't feed.

Sand Pedro was busy, a bit more expensive, and lots of choking exhaust from golf carts- we left early to go back to Caulker. Maybe San Pedro is better when you're on an all-inclusive resort? I dunno- not really our thing.

Go with Ocean Ferry Water Taxi Service. Apparently this is the water taxi the locals use and they charge tourists the same rate as locals unlike the other one.

That's all I remember right now. Have a good time!

Oh yeah, take your own mask, snorkel and fins if you can. Sometimes the ones from the tours are pretty worn out.

Since publication of that story, authorities have detained a Canadian man, who was the female victim's landlord and so-called friend, as a "person of great interest" in this murder.  Of course, the man denies involvement.

Snorkel! We did a boat trip with Raggamuffin tours, they have sail boats and will take you out to different places, either overnight or for the day. We did a day trip from Caye Caulker to three different snorkel spots. It was great, food was provided, the crew was great, and there was nothing better than sailing back at sunset drinking rum punch after a great day in the water.

In Belize right now. Placencia to be exact.  To repeat others, I highly recommend the ATM   cave tour out of San Ignatio. One of the best things I've ever experienced. We're in Placencia now. It's kind of like Key West way back when it was undiscovered and full of characters and sailors.

We are here for a couple of days and then we are off to Caye (key) Caulker to experience another level of off the grid mellow.

Spent two weeks there in 2012. Placencia was our favourite - great beaches and food and offshore sailing and just lovely to ramble around.
ATM cave as everyone mentioned.
Lamanai is one of the best Mayan sites anywhere, but arrange your own transport so that you can explore at your pace. We took a tour, and it felt way too rushed for me.
Caye Caulker was simply too cramped and tiny for us to really enjoy. The only beach there is a laughable 20 meter strip. In retrospect I'd just spend more time in Placencia instead.

It depends on your personality. Do you want touristy/spring break-y feel with associated noise and booziness? Go for San Pedro or Caulker.

Hopkins is a fairly quiet village spread out along a long beach. That would be my choice. It's also fairly central: you can get out to the reef or into the jungle from there without too much hassle.

I've been to Belize twice for the "surf and turf" trip described by a couple of people above... a few days on Caye Caulker followed by a few days in San Ignacio. On my second trip, I ended up road tripping to Tikal with a couple of people from the lodge where I was staying. (Parrot Nest. Fine, but not awesome. Would stay elsewhere next time.) We stayed at Casa Azul in Flores, which was lovely. We were there in October, and we didn't get to Tikal till late in the day, but it was fabulous because there was almost no one else there. Lots of animals out and about, some Mayans performing a private ceremony, etc. Really cool.

Keep in mind that $1 US is $2 BZ. I paid double for my first taxi because I didn't confirm which currency the driver was talking about. People will often give you a price and hope that you assume they're talking about USD. So ask! And take lots of small bills with you.

As noted above, Belize City is only good for flying in or out. I wouldn't stay there even one night. Get off the plane and go directly to a water taxi or a bus. It probably doesn't matter, but I went to Caye Caulker first, then inland. There isn't much on Caye Caulker, but it's very good for relaxing, enjoying some local food (and very watered down drinks, in my experience), etc. Might be a necessary period of recovery if you've been working hard pre-vacation. Then you'll have energy for the more active things to do inland. I stayed at Mara's Place, a very basic but cheap hotel right near the split. Haven't been back since they rebuilt the split. I&I Bar (Rastafarian) is worth the short walk from wherever you're staying. It's 3-4 floors high, mostly open porches, and most of the seats are swings or hammocks. Makes you feel like a kid again. Oh, and Caye Caulker Bakery... the cinnamon rolls...!!

A local "chicken bus" (a recycled American school bus, often with the American city or county still written on the side) will take you from Belize City to San Ignacio for, last time I was there a few years ago, $4 for the entire 3-hour trip. It's not luxurious, but it's darn cheap, and it's a neat peek at the local culture. In San Ignacio, I stayed at Midas, which has cute little cabins that are surprisingly cheap (about $50/night). It's a very quick walk into San Ignacio from there (maybe 10 minutes max). If you're into glamping, Chaa Creek, which is a very expensive resort, has a nice little area where they only charge $50 or so per night. I haven't stayed there, but it looks nice.

I can't seem to find it online, so maybe it's not there anymore, but in San Ignacio, I had the best Indian food I'd ever had in my life. I think I ate there 3 days in a row. It was just a patio behind an Indian couple's house with a little sign out on the sidewalk. She cooked, and he served. Service was super slow, even though they only had 3-4 tables, and their little boys were running around on tricycles, but it was still a pleasant outdoor dining experience, and the food was out of this world. Maybe ask around once you get there if you're interested.

ATM cave, as mentioned above, is definitely worth doing. Also the local Mayan ruins, and if you can get to Tikal, definitely go for it.

Oh, I almost forgot to add that I agree with the recommendations for Raggamuffin Tours. They're a lot of fun, and reasonably priced! One of these days I'd like to go back and do one of their overnight trips.

Gf and I are doing 3 full days in San Ignacio followed by four full days in Caye Caulker in early June, with a day in between to travel from one to the other. Definite to-do items include ATM Cave, snorkeling with Ragamuffin on Caye Caulker, and either Caracol or Tikal (haven't quite decided which). Probably also going to choose a third day trip while in San Ignacio to keep us busy there, leaving Caye Caulker as more of the R&R part of the trip lounging at the Split or wherever. Loving the insight in this thread so far, and def getting amped for the trip itself.

You need a tour guide to go into ATM cave, so it's really easier to take one that leaves from San Ignacio. I believe you can drive yourself and hope to find a guide at the entrance to the archaeological park, but you might have to wait around and I'm not sure if it would be that much cheaper.

Is it best to stay on Hopkins Bay or Caye Caulkers or San Pedro?

We stayed in San Pedro, which is definitely a bustling tourist town. Lots of people (and noisy gas golf carts). We stayed near the northern edge of town where it was noticeably quieter, but not silent. We did stumble into one of Belize's biggest party weekends (Easter), though, so we probably saw it at it's craziest. There is a bridge north of town that leads to a bunch of resorts that I'm sure are quieter but you'd need a cart or taxis to get into town. We stayed in San Pedro because there was more to do (and eat!) and the scuba diving is great and very convenient (we dove 8 times).

We met up with an old acquaintance of my girlfriend who happened to be staying in Caye Caulker. They made it sound pretty relaxing, if perhaps a bit boring. They and their friends had taken the water taxi over to San Pedro to liven things up.

Can't speak to Hopkins...

The ATM cave is the coolest thing in Belize.

Going into Guatemala to see Tikal was the second best.

SCUBA diving was third best.

If you go cave tubing, try not to go when there is a cruise ship in town. It really ruins the experience.

And expect to pay US prices for everything. It's a pretty pricey place for CA.

We arrived Monday morning. Rented a car. Left it near the ferry terminal. Took the ferry to San Pedro. Took a snorkeling tour. Had a nice dinner.
Tuesday we did Explore SCUBA. They must have thought we were naturals because they took us to 75 feet. Very cool. We then took the ferry back to the capital and drove to San Ignacio. We arrived just after dark and had a nice dinner.
Wednesday was cave tubing and zip lining with the tourist hordes.
Thursday was the ATM cave.
Friday was Tikal.
Saturday we drove back to the capital early and flew all the way home.

Kind of whirlwind, but it was all the time we could talk friends into babysitting for.
