Has anyone here retired to State College, Pennsylvania?
« on: November 24, 2014, 09:52:03 AM »
My wife and I are discussing places to live after FIRE.

She really likes State College. Did her PHD and post doc at Penn State.

Has anyone retired there? Or if you thought about retiring there. Why didn't you?

What are the pluses and minuses?

I've never lived there, but can attest that the fishing, hiking, and berry picking in Black Moshannon State Park is excellent.  I have many fond memories of that area.

If you're looking to retire in the most Mustachian way possible, consider nearby Bellefonte. It's a cute town and housing is cheaper than State College itself, which tends to be driven up by the university crowd. Boalsburg may also be worth a look. It's a mere 4 mile bike ride away.

Prabha rented in Bellefonte for awhile. It's a pretty little town. I'll look at Boalsburg. Thanks.

Can't speak about retirement but I lived there in my early 20s (was not a student there).  Being from a major city, I enjoyed the activities available and the wide amount of ethnic food.  The housing is expensive (sold our little 800 sq ft ranch for 200k) but the recession seemed to not touch the area due to the university.  Nice people and the traffic usually isn't too bad.  Boalsburg is definitely one of the nicer places around.

Lived there for 4 years in college. I could certainly see retiring up there. Good atmosphere, lots of activities, restaurants, and bars to keep you entertained. And lots of cool events that are hosted at the university. Also lots of state parks and nature activities to do outside of town. Housing in State College is definitely expensive if you are right near down town. If you go a little further out it isn't that bad, and a lot of places are near the CATA bus loops so transportation isn't bad if you don't want to drive everywhere.

Just know if you do live near the university, especially behind Beaver Ave, expect loud noises and lots of drunks on the weekend. Comes with the territory
