And asking why are glasses so expensive, imagine your cornea or lense is not a perfect sphere so I'm addition to strength (focal distance) they may need to make other corrections to your lense. And like many other people my prescription is not the same for each eye. Third as already mentioned if it's a strong prescription you need to use higher refraction lenses, and usually smaller than standard frames, to keep the lense size small. Sometimes you can only find those frames in the more expensive brands that have more variety in sizes. For people wanting to know about sphere, cylinder, axis of prescription. https://americanrefractivesurgerycouncil.org/what-is-astigmatism-clearing-up-blurry-situation/

My vision was probably 20/20 until I got to my early 20s. It slowly got worse until I started wearing glasses in my mid 20s. My vision is not that bad. Within maybe 10 feet, everything looks about the same with or without glasses, as clear as it always did. But things get blurry beyond that, so I got them primarily for driving reasons. I had to get my prescription slightly strengthened a few years in, but it's now been about 15 years total and my vision hasn't changed any since then. I still mostly just use them for distance. Since I use them for distance, I paid the premium for transition lenses, the kind that darken in the sun, so I don't have to bother with prescription sunglasses. The situations I use them for end up needing the darkened lenses more than 50% of the time anyways.

I'm not embarrassed about wearing them. I'd rather be able to see. I did occasionally forget to put on my glasses when I first got them, but now whenever I'm about to jump in the car or otherwise go outside I just automatically put them on.

I also buy from Zenni Optical online.  Even back 25 years ago when eyeglasses were $400 per pair, I bought them for only $100 per pair from Frame-N-Lens.  I get glasses now from Zenni for like $30.  If I recall correctly you can get progressives from Zenni for around $60.  Worth getting IMO.

I had a very good vision until in early 40s I needed glasses for reading. I just buy cheap reading glasses because my driving is unaffected. When I had an eye exam 1.5 years ago I asked the optometrist if I should be buying their ( more expensive glasses), she said no, keep doing what you're doing, cheap reading glasses are fine for you.
I am due for another exam and will ask that question again and  will follow their advice.
Now I use glasses for all reading and computer related work.

I wear contacts and have for over 30 years. I still recall the very first time I put them in, they slipped right in, I didn't feel them, but every thing was suddenly in focus!!!
I wear them for-- much longer then recommended, day and night. If I do get any irritation, I'll take them out for overnight. I also have Dollar store cheaters, for any close up work, I buy them 10 at a time and have them scattered around. I do have a pair of Zenni prescription glasses that are used when I do have an overnight without my contacts. Contacts have been a real pleasure for me.

Strange question. I presume none of us were born wearing our specs.

People get older, their senses deteriorate. Better get used to it.

Odd question considering many, many adults suddenly need to wear glasses.

So, yes, I was a non-glasses wearing.  Then I was a glasses wearer.

Then I discovered bilberry supplements and after 6-12 months I stopped needing glasses.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
