Hair Clippers
« on: December 30, 2015, 09:20:49 AM »
I've seen this discussed before but I kept getting database errors when using the search function.

Anyone have any favorite hair clippers?  We have the cheapo set from Wal-mart and it's ready to hit the garbage can.  My wife has done a pretty good job with our kids and my hair with crappy clippers, would like to improve to something that doesn't exactly "cut" your hair by yanking it out one follicle at a time.

Amazon has some Whal clippers that are decently reviewed, but curious what the other opinions are.

Those are the exact Wahl clippers I got about four years ago.  They've worked perfectly for me and my son since.

I use the cheapy ones as well, they last for years with just mineral oil on the blade. Should say that I only use no guard once a week so no idea how the cheapy ones work on longer hair.

My previous Wahl clippers lasted over a decade. I replaced it last year with a Wahl pilot - nice and small, travels well, but it's easy to accidentally flip the switch off while you are cutting.

My mom cut my hair until I was 16 when I took over the job. Never paid for a single hair cut in 35 years! How much have I saved if I cut my hair every other week?

I've been using that Wahl set for about 4 years now. No complaints.

I use WAHL typically. I had that same model at one point.

However, I am surprised that others get 4 years out of them. Usually after 2 years the motor starts to slow down for me and affect the quality of the haircut.

Wahl clippers were our best purchase last year. Me and my two sons would get our haircut once every two months at a local barber and he would charge us 18/each for the boys and 22 for me. I like the guy but boy was he expensive. One year and 6 haircuts later, got close to $350 in my pocket and able to get a haircut more often and on my schedule. A couple of YouTube videos have made my wife almost as good as the barber. Money well spent, good luck.

I've had a good experience with a pair of Panasonic clippers I bought in Japan nine years ago. Here is the latest model: http://www.panasonic.com/middleeast/en/consumer/beauty-personal-health-care/mens-grooming/trimmers/er1611.html

More expensive and smaller cutting area than WAHL, but better maneuverability, washable under running water, and until a few years ago the capability to charge the battery and use cordlessly (now I can only use it plugged in, but it's not a big deal). Never seen a WAHL that offers those features.

(History: My family had a pair of WAHL clippers that came with me when I left home for college. That pair lasted a total of 10 years before the motor ran out of juice and started yanking hair out rather than cutting it. I bought another pair of WAHLs, and the materials seemed much flimsier while the motor crapped out after four years. Then, I moved to Japan and got the Panasonic I have now)

Can't speak to durability b/c I've only had them a month but these VACUMM UP THE HAIR as you clip. And they really do get about 95% of the hair:

My WAHLs are also going on 4 years, and I have very coarse, doormat-like hair. They are paid for after haircut #2. Just remember to oil them regularly.

I'm also a fan of Wahl clippers.  I've had the model the OP linked for 2 years and I'm very happy with it.  The Wahl clippers I had before that lasted for 10 years or so.  And I shave my head once a week.

17 years with my Wahl clippers.  Shaving every 1-2 weeks.  Beard and head.
I'm sure I'm under $0.05 per haircut, by now.

What is the longest length possible? I have my hair a bit longer and normally only get a hair cut every 2-3 month to spend less. But if I could do it withclippers myself I would do it more often.

WAHL goes up to #12 (1.5 inches).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
