Gretchen Rubin's Four Tendencies & Mustachians
« on: April 19, 2018, 02:31:39 PM »
Is anyone else a follower of Gretchen Rubin's work? I'm fascinated by her Four Tendencies Model that separates people into four categories depending on whether they meet their own inner expectations for themselves, others' expectations of them, both, or neither.

I suspect that most Mustachians are Upholders or Questioners, who are able to meet their own inner expectations for themselves, not just what others expect from them.

I'm an Upholder, so my theory holds up so far :) What are you?

Questioner.

I enjoy her podcast, but hadn't taken the quiz before. Not surprised I suppose.

Obilger. But I got brought in Mustachianism by my spouse (definitely more of a Questioner), so that fits with being obliging him.

Surprisingly, I'm a Rebel.  Why do I feel like an Obliger?  Maybe I'll try it again in a while.

Rebel. Not much of a surprise, given the industry I'm in. This was telling: "Rebels resist habits, but they can embrace habit-like behaviors by tying their actions to their choices and their identity." Habit-like behaviors! It's why I love the job I do, hours are 9-5 but because so much of it is work I love that gives back, it ties in with the rest of the life I've chosen.

Thanks for posting, OP.

Questioner here.  Although I had trouble answering the quiz and there wasn't any answer that seemed clearly best in many instances.

Wow, way more Rebels than I was expecting, but I love it! Especially since Gretchen says only ~10% of people are rebels. They seem to be the group that's over-represented in Mustachians based on this totally unscientific study.

I'm glad I asked...theory totally disproved.

Yeah it seems weird that there would be so many rebels since FIRE takes a lot of commitment to your personal goals.

Yeah it seems weird that there would be so many rebels since FIRE takes a lot of commitment to your personal goals.

That was my original thought, too. I figured it would be a lot of people who decided to hit a number and were sticking to it via good habits.

Where I think it was shortsighted is that rebels can stick to "habit-ish" behaviors as long as they speak to their personal identity and values. In a round about way, this proves Mustachianism is all about the "Why?" first, and the "How?" comes second for most of us.

Plus, Mustachianism is outside of the mainstream, which has to be a bonus for the Rebels, right?

Yeah I feel like it makes sense that the two types that resist outer expectations would feel less inclined to keep up with the jonses.

Questioner, living with a Rebel.

But I didn't need Gretchen Rubin for that. We don't really fight, we're both fairly reasonable people, but the one thing that he does that annoys me most is that he seems unable to make a commitment and stick to it well in advance, and how he seems to enjoy not doing something that someone asks of him. On the other hand, he's really annoyed by me always asking more questions. I'm not surprised thse personality traits are common among mustachians.

Totally agree. Personally, my FIRE journey requires pretty much no willpower, commitment, or anything else requiring effort, because it's based entirely on habits which reflect my personal values and preferences. I'd hesitate to even call it a "goal", because it's more like the natural extension of my lifestyle. I don't live in a tiny apartment as a sacrifice to save money, I do it because I don't want to do housework and love the minimalist aesthetic. I don't cook and bake everything from scratch as a sacrifice to save money, I genuinely love eating my own food because everything's exactly to my tastes, love feeding my boyfriend, hate the restaurant experience, and just feel way healthier doing things this way.

Questioner.  more importantly INTP.

wife wants me to do some enneagram thing.  pretty sure INTP trumps all or most other systems of categorization tho.

Rebel isn't one of Draconcar's Three and a Half Tendencies, though.  They are:

Inquisitor - Asking the tough questions
Reject - Rejects society
Beholder - Sees truth
Oboe/2 - A single reed woodwind instrument

Questioner.  Of course, this didn't surprise me -- critical thinking has always been my best strength.

"If you’re thinking, “Well, right now I question the validity of the Four Tendencies framework,”

Yep, pretty much my first reaction.

Does anyone else think of these sorts of quizzes as gimmicky?

I don't think it's possible to distill a complex human personality into one of four boxes.  I think most people probably fit each of these categories at different times of life and with respect to different issues.

I mean yes people have tendencies, some more than others, but most people cannot be over simplified in this fashion. I certainly cannot.

I think inventing some sort of scientifically worthless pop-psychology quiz is a GREAT way to get your name in a bunch of sound-byte type articles and TV shows and sell a bunch of repetitive books that are either common sense or dumb down real psychological research.  So it's useful for Gretchen Rubin to come up with these categories but a waste of time for me to think about them.

As an example, I am definitely not a rebel but I am also not taking her dumb quiz.
