got groceries with my bike trailer
« on: April 01, 2014, 07:30:09 AM »
Last night I went and got groceries with my bike trailer for the first time.  I got some apple cinnamon granola to put in my yogurt that was marked down from $4.79 to $1.16 on closeout price; I grabbed 2.  They rang up at $4.79 at the register though.  I took the receipt to customer service and they refunded me $12.26.   I'm not sure exactly how the math worked out but the manager seemed very confident that was my refund, so I just said thanks and went on my way.  They essentially paid me $2.68 to take a couple boxes of granola off their hands.  Wish I would have grabbed all 4 boxes, but I wasn't sure I was gonna even like it.

How is it dishonest?  They have some sort of scan-right policy.  I thought they simply refunded the difference, or marked the item as free, but apparently its more than 100% money back.  She was aware of how much she gave me and insisted it was correct.  She did not explain the exact policy though and I don't feel like its my job to argue with her.

Your initial post made it sound very much like you were taking advantage of a mistake that they made.  Which is blatantly dishonest.  ("Hey guys, they gave be back two 5s in change instead of the single 5 dollar bill that I was owed and I totally just took the money!" is along the same lines.)

If they have a policy to pay people money when they scan things incorrectly, then of course there was no problem and you had a lucky day.

My original intention was just to get some steeply discounted granola.  I'm still unclear what their policy is as she didn't fully explain it to me.

Also which part made it seem dishonest? The part where I specifically mentioned she was confident about the change she gave me when brought to her attention? Or another part?

only about another 30 trips for this bike trailer to pay for itself in reduced car usage.

Score! Good for you.

I actually did find money on the floor at the grocery store last night. Brought my overall spending from $28 to $26.

Nice! Don't forget to factor in mileage. My car costs $0.40/mile to run, so any grocery trips sub $100 feel really silly unless it is with the bike.

My store actually has a scan guarantee, so if you buy an item at X and it scans as Y, they give you the item for free
If it's more than $5, they give you the difference plus $5 on top as the scan guarantee.

If you had two in the transaction, they probably gave your item 1 for free, refunded the difference on the second item and then added the $5 or whatever amount your store offers.

Not all Customer Service people know that, so sometimes they just give you the difference and I usually don't make waves when that happens.
However, when you get a knowledgable CS person and they do it right, that's what happens and I think it's pretty sweet!!

Now technically you could get the remaining boxes next time and if they have not fixed the mistake, you could get your refund again.
A friend of mine would do that systematically with stuff that rang up wrong, she would always get another one next time she went to the store
and cash in on the scan guarantee. Honestly, that would be too much hassle for me. But to each their own.

That's what it is, I just did the math.  She refunded the difference of both plus $5.  That was ridiculously simple, I don't know why she couldn't have explained that, unless she relied on the computer and didn't understand how the computer spit out that number.  I'm pretty sure she was correcting the mistake as I left so I probably won't be able to do it again.  I also doubt they will have any boxes left by my next shopping trip since there were only 2 left on the shelf and it was a closeout item.   I added it to my yogurt today though and it was pretty good.

Ah, but it's addictive!  My favourite workout these days is biking to different grocery stores to pick up loss-leaders and get the cheapest of whatever's on our menu for that week.  Panniers are great too, but having the extra cargo space in a trailer makes it so much easier to stock up when there's a good deal.
