Good sheets?
« on: August 17, 2017, 01:28:56 PM »
Where do I buy affordable, yet durable sheets?  All our recent ones seem to pill very quickly which I find very uncomfortable.  I don't need ridiculous thread counts, just something that lasts.

I have a couple of 600 thread counts that have lasted for years. I have bought them from Bed Bath & Beyond (with the 20% coupon) and Tuesday Morning for about $50 to $60.  I also bought some on Amazon but they were horrible and ended up throwing away.

Surprisingly, take a look at Target's Threshold brand. I like the classic percale ones. They're taking a beating from the cats and weekly washings and holding up REALLY well.

Don't buy sheets with any polyester in them. That's what usually causes pilling.

I generally look for bamboo sateen weave sheets.  I bought my last set in 2012 and they are going strong still. Admittedly, they were expensive ($170 for king), but I think they're going to last at least 5 more years. And I only bought 2 sets so the sheets are in just about constant use.

'Bamboo' is rayon, so if you like rayon that can be a good choice. I have no experience with how well it holds up as sheets.

I like 100% cotton. I got a set on clearance from LLBean, and two other sets from Marshalls (Tommy Hilfiger brand). Both are holding up beautifully (~2+ years). Neither were particularly cheap, but the sets from Marshalls were under $50 for a full set (sorry, I can't remember exact price).

I second this recommendation.  Very high quality for the money.

LOVE THESE. Thick, durable, comfy. My cat did poke a hole through it with his nail, but that's my own damn fault for letting them get too long (their regular kept nails wouldn't have done anything, I just missed one). Definitely recommend these.

We've been using these sheets from Target for 8 years (we have 2 sets), and they are amazing!  The current price is $100, but I saw them a month ago for $40.  They are thick and ridiculously soft. https://www.bergners.com/sc1/brands/brands-livingquarters/bed-bath-8658/bed-bath-bedding-sheets-8658/livingquarters-1-000-thread-count-cotton-rich-6-pc-sheet-sets-540585.html

I've had my current sheets for at least 7 years, and they are doing wonderfully.  100% cotton, fitted bottom sheet, blue, thread count 600 I believe.  Got them at Macy's for ~$70 with a coupon, and worth every penny.  I use them almost every day, wash once per week, and have had no issues with wear or pilling.  The only damage is from having run them through the wash and dryer with a pocket knife by accident, and the metal wore a small frayed patch.  Otherwise they would be good to go for many more years!  I will be buying a replacement pair of sheets when they go on sale and plan to get something very similar to these.

Huh.  I didn't know that about bamboo.  We've been very happy with some bamboo (apparently rayon?) sateen sheets for the past five years.

All bamboo fabric would be a rayon, but not all rayon is made from bamboo.

Rayon was the first manufactured fiber. The term rayon was officially adopted by the textile industry. Unlike most man-made fibers, rayon is not synthetic. It is made from wood pulp....

Due to a marketing job, I know more about home goods than I care to!  But in my experience, better quality sheets (but not super fancy ones) last many times longer than cheap ones.  I'll never buy cheap ones again.

Percale (plain weave) wears longer than sateen.

Thread count means little.  These days they can spin really fine thread from absolute crap cotton, meaning sheets that seem fancy initially, but wear thin and tear in no time.

I'll go along with The Sweet Home's recommendations:

The LL Bean ones are awesome, and super durable.  Another favorite of mine are the Lands End ones made of oxford cloth.  They take a few washes to soften up, but after that they're great.

Marshalls is good too.  Look for name brands like Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren Polo or Laura Ashley.  At Marshalls they're the real thing discounted, vs. made-for-the-outlet crap.  You can put together nice queen sets for $60-70, especially if you don't mind mixing colors.

Lands end sheets are the best quality I've found and they have sales.

I gave DW some Garnet Hill ones for Christmas, cotton flanel. Super thick, well made, oversized, and very comfortable. They were expensive, but I think they will be around for at least a decade so that should work out OK in the end.

It was/is a super-effective marketing gimmick!

I thought they were selling us a set of sheets, not a load of sheet.  :P

They are rated pretty well and very reasonably priced. I was looking for a set at Kohl's this weekend and was surprised by the prices. Just ordered a set. Thanks.
