Good Mustachian Black Friday Deals
« on: November 27, 2015, 11:06:55 AM »
I know Black Friday can be very antimustachian. But, it can also be a chance to get some good deals, particularly from the comfort of your couch. Post any great deals (and why you think they're great!) here!

I'm currently stewing over the amazon deal on the Instapot. Everyone has raved about it, and it has been on my amazon wishlist for several months now. It's currently 68% off the normal price. I have 14 hours left to decide. $78.50 isn't cheap, though! I think it's a mustachian deal though, because the instapot uses very little electricity, and because I would be able to make my own yogurt... although technically I could do that in my crockpot, I just haven't.

Feel free to try and sway my instapot purchase decision!

If you wait until Cyber Monday - Walmart has it for $79 and includes minimitts. That's what I'm waiting for since I have an instant pot on my wishlist too (only because of posts here *sigh* I had no idea pressure cookers even existed before the thread here). I have been wavering for the last few weeks and a couple of weeks ago, decided $100+ was more than i wanted to spend right now. Seeing it for$79 changed my mind.

I also went online and ordered a portable basketball system for my son for $69 (regularly $150). I did check my local craigslist (Kijiji is bigger here) but I didn't like what was out there. Plus the hassle of transporting/unscrewing, etc. DH and I are not too handy, especially with rusty screws. It would have saved maybe $20-30. Plus, my Dad will pay the $69 as a combo birthday/Christmas gift for my son.

It's not been a super Mustachian weekend for me so far. I also dropped another $50 at Kmart.com last night - a new blanket for me + winter gloves for the kids and a couple of other odds and ends. I had a LOT more shopping urges, but managed to restrain myself.

That's always my internal debate with Black Friday. On the one hand, I can save a lot for things I need (ex, I am still looking for good sock and underwear deals if anyone has seen any...), but on the other hand, TEMPTATION. That's why I try to get my Christmas gifts planned out ahead of time- takes away one of my internal excuse mechanisms (but So and So would love this...).

Ugh, had I known it was going to go down I would've waited a few weeks. I bought one and love it :)

I bought a Roku SE. It was only $25 (compared to the usual $50+) and I needed something to watch youtube, amazon prime, etc. on my tv.

...psst...the Starbucks Verismo system is 47% off, selling at $79.

Instapot of coffee, instapot or coffee. Such a difficult decision.

The Goodwill Store has 50% off on all donated merchandize today.  Bought two pair of jeans and two fleece tops.  Costco has $10 off fresh pork loins.  That brings the price down to less than $1.00/lb.  I bought five.

The coffee ends up still being more than a cheap drip or french press so definitely the Instapot :)

The Kindle Fire for $35.00 at Best Buy and Amazon.com I think is a good deal. It is the new 7 inch tablet that normally sells for $50.00. I bought one today, first tablet I ever bought. It is pretty good for the basics, web browsing, skype, videos.

I bought the instapot.  First, from Walmart for 104 and then I saw the Amazon deal. Called Walmart to price match they wouldn't so cancelled and bought it from Amazon. I don't need another kitchen appliance but I have wanted this for awhile. I am looking forward to receiving it.

I bought the Amazon Fire package at Staples.  Tablet plus a case and the 32GB SIM card.  It was $5.00 less than a similar package on sale at Amazon.  With $5.00 sitting in Staples rewards and the five percent back Chase Ink card, I think the total price was about $47.50.  Never had a tablet before.  Good for doing a few things while on the road or someplace there is no computer.  Easier to read a map or look up a number than on a cell phone screen.  Not sure how it deals with viruses and malware, though.   And I don't think I will be doing my banking on it in the McDonald's parking lot.

Missed the Instantpot.  It was in the cart, but debated too long.

If anyone knows or finds a quality camera mostly for action photos I am looking for one. One of my younger sons really dreams of working for National Geographic some day which is unique in its own right. So i want to make this either his main gift or depending on price only gift BUT i dont know where to even begin. Obviously zoom and perhaps if he continues one that features/lenses can be added too. Thanks

Warning:  It's doubtful that a $50 or $150 sewing machine will be able to handle the relatively heavy fabric you want for thermal window covers.

Damn. I forgot about the pork loins when I was there. I had MrsTX go through the flyer and she didn't remind me about it.

It applies only to the most expensive book so you may want to try making a few purchases or use different accounts.

Instant Pots - which make and model?  All Walmart has online is the Salton 5-in-one electric pressure cooker for $99.99 and they are out of stock.

Amazon.ca has the same Salton model for $79.98, and 4 Instant Pot models (http://www.amazon.ca/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_9_10?url=search-alias%3Dkitchen&field-keywords=electric+pressure+cooker+stainless+steel&sprefix=electric+p%2Ckitchen%2C216&rh=n%3A2206275011%2Ck%3Aelectric+pressure+cooker+stainless+steel).  Anyone used any specific one of these?

Americans who are in shock at the listed prices, remember at the moment it takes about $1.37 CAN to get $1.00 US - prices reflect this.  I may just wait until the exchange rate improves.

Here's the "Cyber Monday" deal, appears it's for the older "LUX" model:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/46700672

On Friday they had the "DUO" model (which adds "Yogurt" feature and maybe other stuff?) on sale for $78.50 - don't see that deal any more.

What is your budget?

I've been lusting after the Sony A6000 which is a mirrorless camera. Currently (as of 11/29/2015) the camera with the kit lens (16-50 mm) is now around $550 with a $50 Amazon gift card (Pick the Holiday Bundle).

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Mirrorless-Digital-Camera-16-50mm/dp/B00I8BICB2

Adding in a longer zoom lens (55-210mm) brings the price to $700. It is supposed to have excellent autofocus and has excellent reviews.

If you don't mind larger DSLR cameras, then it may be possible to get deals on refurbished Canon cameras.

Personally I am a fan of Pentax SLR cameras as they have an excellent price to feature ratio and many of their models are weather sealed, something other manufacturers only offer in high end gear. There is a list of offers here: http://www.pentaxforums.com/articles/deals/pentax-camera-deals-black-friday-2015.html

The one that stands out is the K-S1 for $179 ($279 - $100 mail in actually). http://www.samys.com/p/Digital-SLRS/06424/K-S1-DSLR-Camera-with-18-55mm-Lens-Black/158308.html

Review at: http://www.pentaxforums.com/reviews/pentax-k-s1-review/introduction.html

I personally have had a K-50 since late 2013 and it's awesome.

Agreed on the sewing machine. You can find a better model that will hold up better used on Craigslist for $50. I actually got a really good on for free on CL a while ago, then paid about 50 to have it serviced, but worth way more than that.

And never underestimate Buy Nothing Group! I just got a free sewing machine from there. Supposedly pretty good quality too, owner had gotten a new one.

Another source of good sewing materials and supplies are estate sales.

We bought way too much stuff, but it was all stuff we had been ruminating on for awhile.  So the spend pains me, but it was sort of all planned.

New Nexus phones for H and I.  Planned at full price, my brother found them at 80$ off plus a 25$ gift card on BF.

Fitbit for me.  This is definitely in the stupid consumer crap category but I have been noodling about it for awhile.  On sale for 90$ from ~130? and I get 100$ cash for xmas from the in laws that will pay it off.  (well, it will be paid off when the CC bill comes, but YKWIM)

2 booster seats for DD, regular price 50$ each, occasionally on sale for 40, 30$ on BF.  She outgrew her carseat.  Yay for no more carseats ever again!

New microwave at Target on BF.  40$.  Most are over 60 regular price, if not closer to 100.  Our current one sometimes randomly turns itself on, which we have decided is a fire hazard, lol.  Have been checking ads for a month now, this was by far the best price we had seen.  Yes we could live without a microwave if we had too, but we use it all the time.  I would be more willing to try, but some things aren't worth divorce.

Now we both feel sick and will not be buying anything else for a long time!

Cat litter from Petsmart! Ended up getting three 30lb buckets for under $20 (normally $12 each). It might possibly be the saddest Black Friday purchase ever, but it will last my two cats a good six months.

I get in on the Petsmart Black Friday cat litter deal EVERY YEAR. It's the ONLY thing I shop for on BF. In and out the store in 10 minutes, avoid all other places like the plague.
So you are not alone =^.^=
I got 7 buckets to donate to my favorite cat rescue for around $20 after coupons!

PetSmart's Black Friday cat litter deal is the second great BF deal I have heard about at MMM.  Last year I heard people chortling about the BF deals on turkey at Costco so I went (turned out they had an even better deal on pork loins so I bought those instead) Next year I will also make a stop at PetSmart.

Almost everything on Target's website has a 15% discount with promo code "CYBER15".  If you have a Target RedCard, you get free shipping and an additional 5% discount as usual.  Many items on the site are "staples/consumables" that I purchase anyway throughout the year anyway, so perhaps not a bad time to stock up.

Disclaimer: I own some shares of TGT :)
