First month was fantastic... something like $40 back from Upside. Helped that I had used it for my camper van after a long road trip. Two things I'm noticing:
1. Savings drop off considerably after the first tank/first month codes expire.
2. The prices that Upside quotes are consistently lower than what I find at the pump when I arrive... So I'm pulling up the app, finding the gas station with the low price, driving to it immediately, only to discover that Upside was promising a much lower price than what's at the pump. This innacuracy is a pain... once you arrive, you either pay the higher price, or drive away and have wasted a trip. I can mitigate this a tiny bit by finding gas stations that are along my route, but most of the alleged lower prices require a short trip out of my normal routes.
3. I do get some cents from my sister using my referral code, but I'm not sure if Upside is really saving her any $ on gas.
With 1 & 2 together, it's a matter of a few cents difference between what I'd pay at my on-base Valero station vs what Upside can find me. Starting to get the impression that Upside is depending on a wave of good deals to get people hooked, but continued use doesn't provide my value.
