General question on % saved of net income
« on: December 27, 2013, 10:27:06 AM »
Would you include an employer match to a 401k when calculating total percentage of net income saved?  I'm at 45% savings without the employer contribution, 52% with the contribution.

Since employer match is not part of your income to immediately save or spend, I would not include it in the percentage of income saved.

Thanks for the replies.  I now have 2 columns in my spreadsheet.

iamlindoro - I understand your reasons, and getting to 50% without including match will be my goal for 2014, but I'm going with gooki's answer since I've never come anywhere close to this level of savings before and I'm craving some satisfaction (and hey, I did earn the match by working and investing in the 401k - I just don't need to pay taxes on it!).
