Frugal/Money Making Brainstorming. Website Amazon Banner?
« on: March 24, 2015, 06:47:11 PM »
I was just thinking about away to make a little extra cash.  I noticed that on many of the podcasts I enjoy the talent, not sure what to call them, ask that if listeners are going to purchase something from amazon that they click through the amazon banner on the podcast's site and they get a small percentage while the customer pays the normal price.  I haven't noticed a permanent banner on MMM's site but in a couple of articles he did provide links to specific amazon items that I am sure he gets a commission for if you follow it and make a purchase.  But anyways I was wondering if anyone has a relatively low traffic site with a amazon banner on there that they use for personal purchases and maybe get a small following, close friends, family, few site loyalists, to use it too if it makes you any considerable money?  I don't have a popular site currently but it would be an interesting/fun pursuit and I am curious how difficult it would to get it to make me a few extra dollars.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but I spent two or three hours a few years ago compiling a long list of books and movies in a certain niche.  Almost all of these links were Amazon affiliate links.  I posted it to a message board and it was a sticky thread for about a year.  Since I compiled that list, I haven't touched it and I have gotten $2061 from Amazon affiliate payments.

One thing to note is that when someone clicks your link, you get commission for everything they buy on Amazon within 24 hours.  So I'll have someone click the link for a book, and they end up buying 10 other things, I get $10-15 just from them.

I just looked back through my earnings and saw that after clicking my book link, someone went on to buy a mattress, and I got a nice $30 commission for that.

Just FYI, Amazon has a few banned states for their affiliate program. I believe they are Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

I live in one of those states and had plans to be an Amazon affiliate until I discovered that. I've heard there are work arounds, so those that live in a banned state may still have a chance.

Dang, I live in one of those states... I'll have to look into the work arounds.  That's awesome and inspiring kpd905!  roughly $1000 bucks an hour.  That motivates me, but I'm thinking that because I do most of my shopping through amazon if I get so much as a .5% heck .1% it would work like a cash back credit card not even counting on any traffic I can direct to it.

I think it must earn some people a lot of money.

There are a few facebook pages I follow where they post affiliate links all the time. With annoying phrases like
"One of these would be great for my son!" or "This is a must need for the backyard."  and then you have to click to find out what the heck it is.

I didn't know about the 24 hour for ALL purchases thing, so that makes sense that they just want you to click, even if you don't buy that thing.

The current states are Arkansas, Colorado, Maine, Missouri, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

The banned list exists so Amazon can avoid having a "physical presence" in those states and avoid being required to collect sales tax under local laws, so once Amazon is forced to collect tax in a state for other reasons the state comes off the list.

So how would one set up such an Amazon Affiliate link?  I've done a quick Google search under "amazon affiliate" and I've looked on the amazon website and my search results are very convoluted.  Can anyone help with a good link or clue?

MOD NOTE TO EVERYONE: Please do not post your affiliate links on these forums.  Good luck with your side hustles elsewhere.  :)  Thanks.

Join the program, head over to the discussion forums and start reading.  One thing I will say is that many folks run ad-blockers and will not see the banners, so I don't bother with them.

I make about $50 to $100 every month with my Amazon affiliate account. The primary driver of traffic are my Youtube channels with about 23,000 combined subscribers.

Obviously every little bit helps, but if it's just friends and family using the link occasionally you aren't going to make much. I believe they also now require you to have a website to get an active affiliate account, you can't just get a link to send around.

The amazon affiliate program is a great way to make some easy additional income off of traffic that you already have, but for most people it is not going to be a significant source of income, although I have seen some websites that make thousands a month from it. One was a hobby site mostly about RC planes, drones, whatever. They would do reviews and link to the planes with their affiliate account and bring in 4 or 5 g's a month.
