Yes I'm asking for myself as the Mama :) I'd like to give my husband some suggestions.

Flowers.

Not purchased per cut ones. Seeds. Start them now and you might have some sprouts in time? :)

my kids made a set of bookmarks each for my wife one year- I laminated them and she uses them constantly- she's an avid reader and I noticed she was sticking scraps of paper in to hold her place- that's where the idea came from... I think it would work no matter the kids ages, just have them do what they want and write a message to mom...

Potted orchid flower. If you get newly sprouted ones they, the blooms,  will last up to 3 months. All you have to do is water it once a week with two ice cubes. In the right window it will sprout every 6 months or so and becomes the gift that keeps on giving.

Flowers and a card from Trader Joes - $6-7 dollars for what would cost $17 at another grocery or pharmacy.

Or, home made breakfast? An ice cream date for the family? Handmade cards from the kids? Home grown flowers could be good - seeds for the kids to plant with you. Maybe a mug they decorated and some tea to go with it. Family pictures arranged with a friend to be the photographer at a near by park.

Do you like bath bombs?  They're actually pretty easy and cheap to make (about 50¢-per-bomb).  Just citric acid + baking soda + natural oils (for fragrance). I made a half-dozen for my SO a while ago using sage and lemon rind.  Beats the $6 that Lush and other stores charges for them....

As the mom in my household, I don't typically ask for anything. (kids are still too small to think of anything on their own.) However, this year I have asked my husband for a clothesline. It's something we would buy anyway, as we moved to this house late last fall and are now ready to put one out. But I thought it would kill two birds with one stone if I just told him it could be a Mother's day gift.

As a daughter, I typically give my mothers and grandmothers hanging plants (usually found at Lowe's or Aldi for 5.99 and up) or a rose bush  (around $5-10) I typically plant my grandmother's for her, if it's something that needs put in the ground. Bonus points for the extra time spent with her.

I want my husband to fix the bathroom sink! And I'd like a nap.

My MIL asked for lavender scented goats milk soap. I was thinking of making bird seed "ornaments" to hang on trees too because she loves bird watching.

I'm not sure what to do for my mom yet.

Last year my husband and I planted three blackberry bushes for my mom.  She really liked it and is looking forward to eating the blackberries this year.

The opportunity to sleep in, read, and have my husband cook.  (I typically never cook on Mother's Day.)

This (and for the kids to not fight for just one day)

Stepping stones with their hand prints or foot prints.

These can be found at arts and crafts stores for ~$10 or $15.  The kits will have a mold, concrete, and mosaic stones.

You can do the same with an empty pizza box as a mold and a bag of the easy mix concrete.

I am asking for breakfast in bed and two hours to read.

Also, a gift card towards my coveted vitamix (not necessarily frugal but I would be spending the money eventually anyways)

I generally leverage Mothers Day to do some fun activity that my couch potato husband wouldn't ordinarily want to do. Usually it's just a day hike or a trip into the city, but we've also done camping weekends.

This year we're taking a whale watching excursion, but that's not a big outlay because we live on the California coast (the trip itself is actually not that expensive, and in some cases the proceeds go to conservation funds).

I like going to the movie with a friend (chick flicks) but don't like to spend the money, so my husband or children get me movie passes. we go to afternoon matinees and don't get concessions and still enjoy ourselves.

I'm going to ask my mom if she wants to go to the first farmers market of the season with me. They also have places to eat lunch. It also coincides with a local festival that has music and is next to the farmers market.

That sounds wonderful to me.

any outstanding home projects you want finished? I'm begging my husband to paint the bedroom.

and I recently had a baby and am getting back to regular weight so I'm going to ask him to watch the kids for a couple of hours while I hit the nearby thrift store's mother's day sale

I think I've got us agreeing to a picnic on the beach with a menu of my choosing and bacon cheeseburgers for dinner :)
