Form 1095B - Health Coverage Requirements in 2021
« on: March 24, 2021, 11:49:36 PM »
I never paid much attention to this in the past, but I recall you were required to always have health coverage as part of the individual mandate under the ACA. I believe Trump's administration killed this (https://www.healthcare.gov/fees/fee-for-not-being-covered/   2019 and beyond).

I will be changing jobs in the near future. Last day at current job is April 23. First day at new job is May 10. I believe even under the old rules, I would technically have had medical insurance in every month. Under the new rules, I don't think it matters.

Can anyone confirm that for 2021, this kind of job change and gap in medical coverage is now okay and that I won't have some fee applied to my tax filing?

Under current law, whether you have medical coverage or not is irrelevant for federal taxes.  It may matter in some states (e.g., California).

As you can see with the recently passed laws, Congress can make retroactive changes, but it seems unlikely there would be a retroactive health insurance mandate.

Even when the individual mandate did apply, I'm pretty sure it only kicked in for people who went more than two months without coverage.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
