Forgot my PIN....
« on: September 18, 2013, 07:38:30 PM »
I've taken the day off work today, just cos I have so much holidays saved up that I'm being asked to take some leave before my balance blows out further LOL.

Went shopping for some new work shirts as my old ones are showing their age, not looking very professional anymore.

I get to the counter, mentally cursing the shopping centre for, well, basically being a place where hard earned money is burned. And I get out my credit card to pay.

So because it's been forever and a day since I made a largish purchase I had actually forgotten my credit card PIN. (Yes I pay it off every month before interest is charged, no I don't care if you think all credit cards are bad etc).

How many of you have changed your shopping habits so much that you have just plain forgotten what your PIN is?

I use credit, not debit, which doesn't require a PIN here.

I have forgotten similar things though.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Same thing happened to me last week!! My fiancé and I where getting ready to go to the Dominican Republic for her moms wedding and were leaving right after work on Friday evening. I had every intention of getting some spending money from the bank during working hours but things got a little hectic at work and I spaced it off. I remembered on my way home (after banking hours) that I didn't get any cash. No problem right?! In the year 2013 there are ATMs on pretty much every corner right. Well ATMs work great as long as you have a PIN number (which I could NOT remember). Long story short called the 1800 number on the card and reset my pin. But was still pretty funny. I'm glad I'm not the only one

If you want to send me your CC# and PIN I'd be glad to help you remember next time. Kind of like giving a spare set of keys to your neighbor.

I don't believe you get the same security and fraud protection if you use your pin, rather than running your debit card as "credit" with a signature.

The first hit of a google search led me directly to visa's website:

Are there benefits to signing for my Visa Debit card transactions?
When you sign for your purchases, you get security protections that help prevent, detect and resolve fraud. Many rewards programs also require you to sign to collect rewards points. However, if you PIN for your Visa Debit card transactions, you may not receive the same security protections for Visa Debit card transactions not processed by Visa.

I've always chosen "credit" whenever I use my card.  Merchants definitely want you to use your PIN though.  Anyone else notice how the "credit" option is often buried one or two menu options in.

At my grocery store, even if you select credit, they take you to the PIN screen.  Then you have to hit cancel again to get out of it.
