FIRE made you a better boss?
« on: June 09, 2016, 09:29:08 PM »
Has being on the road to FIRE impacted you as a boss?

This path has made me way more focused on quality of life, and this seems to have impactee my approach to employees. When they get caught up in the bullshit of work, we shift our focus to what we actually have control over and how what we do helps others. When I have to give them numbers addressing their productivity, we put more emphasis on what the numbers mean (helping others). If they want to come to work late or schedule a day off, go for it cause your job is hard and you spend over 40hrs a week doing it.  Did an exit interview yesterday and the staff told me I was the easiest manager in our program to work with cause I'm straightforward, give a fuck about them, and don't micro manage.  This was really nice to hear cause I've been working hard on my managerial skills, and the staff have had a hand in helping me grow and mature a lot. But, I wonder if I'd have this mindset if I didn't realize how the importance of living a fulfilling life and trying to be FI. People get so caught up in the work, they forget to look at the big picture of just living a fulfilling life.

Which is why I'm curious how it's impacted you as a boss?

I'm even more relaxed than I used to be at work and with employees, and often will let them off early or take long lunch breaks when workflow permits.

Sorry didn't see the response until today.  I totally feel you on this. Sure some things about work are important, but having a FIRE mindset makes you realize shit just isn't all that serious. Plus, you want the staff you have to also enjoy their life, so your focus becomes more on that.  it's amazing how that actually improves morale and productivity lol

Dan Pink has some great stuff on how to make employees happy at work. he often talks about Zappos and their work culture.

Agreed. I'm much calmer and don't sweat the small stuff as much. I'm not looking to assign blame now and will even take the blame for things that aren't necessarily my fault as long as it will move our focus to fixing the problems.

I'm not the big boss-- somewhere in the middle-- so I could still get fired, but now I know I'll be okay even if that happens. It's totally liberating having FU money in my pocket. It lets me act according to my conscience without being so worried about the repercussions (I always acted the same but was much more worried). So far it's working out quite well.

That's really great to hear! It's nice how having the FU money makes it easier for you to not worry and stick up for what you believe in, rather than just nod your head and go along with things. I'm always telling my boss that i'm waiting for her to fire me for disagreeing  or calling her out on stuff, even though it takes an act of God to get anyone fired from a gov't job

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
