Financial Plan For Special Needs Child
« on: February 03, 2019, 12:16:53 PM »
I have a child who is on the autism spectrum but is high functioning.  Our school system has had a program for him but he is about to graduate and I'm extremely concerned about his future.  I've been tossing around ideas for starting a nonprofit to employ people on the spectrum.

Beyond that, I'm looking for suggestions about general financial planning for my child.  I think he would be capable of working at least part-time with some support, but I don't really see him fully supporting himself.

Lots of options, look around your community. Maybe start with a local autism group to point you in the right direction.

The Choose FI podcast episode 108 had William Mcvey on talking about the financial aspects with his special needs kids recently.

Thank you for the responses.  I will listen to the podcast mentioned.

My plan is to purchase an apartment for my son and hopefully he can have roommates similar to him. My hope is he can have a life, a job, and friends like him.  I found a few employers who hire people on the spectrum. https://www.verywellhealth.com/top-autism-friendly-employers-4159784

Arizona has a program for autistic adults where they have group housing and job support.  Unfortunately, I can't find a nationwide program to address the needs of people on the spectrum and their families.
