Finally getting DH on board
« on: June 16, 2016, 01:06:24 PM »
After a few miserable weeks at work for both of us, my husband is now starting to talk FIRE.  This morning he declares that he is so glad we have a plan and he's on the home stretch.

Of course, he still tells me he wants to work another 5 years to secure his pension.   DAMMIT.

small victories...I'll take it.

Any suggestions on getting him to pull the trigger before 5 years???

If he's gone from disinterested to talking about FIRE, that's already a huge step.  (Congrats!)

I'd leave it alone.  Either work will get better and you'll have a happier husband or the suck will continue and he'll wonder, on his own, how to get free sooner.  It's a process, don't rush it.

Maybe he likes his job enough to want to stay?  I don't think it's honestly fair of you to tell him to quit his job.

I personally really like working- I'm not really all that interested in being retired TO early- because I'll go nuts on my own. I like the structure.

I'd agree with @okits- let it be- he'll process and realize he hates it- or continue on this journey. I think getting him on board at all is a huge step!

Yea, I'm leaving it alone for now.  I'll wait for him to bring it up.  I'm retiring soon with or without him.
And I'm not telling him to quit, I just wanted us to quit together is all.  And he doesn't like his job at all.  He likes money.

Congrats on the upcoming retirement!  I designed a FI/RE plan for our family but my wife is only tentatively on board.  I actually don't care.  If she wants to keep working - by all means.  I'm sure that after a while we'd align again.  Either I'd get bored or she'd get too jealous of my free time :)

Will he still get his pension if he FIREs now?

Will his pension be for the rest of his life?

If I was 5 years from receiving a full pension I would stay for the duration.   Even if you don't need it right now, it is just a little bit extra cushion and investment money.

Walking away from some pensions can be like walking away from several million dollars in the bank.  Not a decision to be taken lightly.

Obviously, the lesser the pension, the easier it is.

It's not a great pension at all.  He's a Govt employee with 5 years and he needs 10 for the pension. And he doesn't even get it until he's 65 (I think, might be 62).  We are talking a couple hundred bucks a month and no other benefits.

Is he Federal?- then it is 5 years, not 10 and it can start at 62 and you can carry your health insurance with you.

He's federal.  The 10 year pension is about 500 more than he would get now.  We don't need health insurance.  I think he calculated it out to be 1000 a month after 10 years.

So, I guess he's working 5 more years for 150k.

Whatever.  Maybe he will get sick of me always on trips or staying home doing my projects.  :)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
