Favorite labor-saving devices?
« on: October 19, 2019, 12:49:12 PM »
Yeah, I know, things like dishwashers and robo-vacs are generally considered un-Mustachian. But when you're dealing with health issues, you start seeing labor-saving devices as a way to live independently longer.

So -- what are your favorite labor-saving devices, and why? Any new ones on the horizon that you're excited about?

For day to day use? A washing machine, fridge and a dishwasher.

The washing machine:
Clean clothes without much effort. When we were in HK staying at my BIL my wife washed our clothes by hand (because I'd just let it soak in a bucket and then hang to dry). This really made me appreciate that luxury.
He didn't have a washing machine but did have an airco though. Then again, 35C outdoors with 95% humidity can do that to a man...

The dishwasher, mainly because it keeps an annoying chore at bay. We usually load it op with small things after using them (for things like cups we re-use them all day) and let it run every other day or less. Pots and pans are big and easy so we do those manually.

The fridge, I don't want to go shopping every day :P

Elevators and escalators.  These are important for anyone with mobility issues.  Bad heart, bad lungs, bad knees, bad hips, parents with a stroller and little one.

Dishwasher, washing machine, food processor (for making soups, hummus, pesto etc.), fridge and freezer.

I LOVE my dishwasher. I've never had one before, and I did a of of research into getting one that would meet my expectations. It was not at all cheap but OMG I love it.

Ebike.  Got one this summer.  LOVE it.

Various OXO products (not electric, not sure if they make things that are electric).  Their Good Grips swivel veggie peeler is fabulous.

Ramps/step-free living.  Not only more accessible for humans but greatly simplifies bringing things in/out of the house.

Money.  Nothing saves (my) labor like outsourcing (some) tasks.  We've just paid to have other people put a new (shingle) roof on our home and install a new kitchen faucet, among other things -- both tasks I'm perfectly capable of and have done before.  Very nice to be able to pay someone else to do them for me.

I love my robot vac. Keeps me minimizing items that touch the floor and keeps the kids picking up their rooms. And I can run it while at work so come home to nice clean floors.

Some fascinating responses here. I wouldn't have thought to include Uber, but it makes sense in context.

I'm loving my new robot vac too. Haven't had a dishwasher in decades, but I'm seriously considering taking the plunge on that one.

And yeah, outsourcing things I would once have done myself is hard, but often worth it. I'll still do small projects, but leaving the bigger ones for the professionals may be better for my health. Dammit.

Now if I could just afford to hire a full-time chef. :D

Thanks, folks.

A long-handled duster.  Easier to reach both ceiling fans and baseboards, thus preventing falls and hurting from bending over.

My hand mixer, and especially the chopper attachment. I misplaced the blade of the chopper a while back and had to cut onions and garlic by hand for a few months. I was so happy when I found that back last week. I usually food prep during the weekend and it saves me so much time not having to cut up everything by hand.

The washing machine too. When I first moved out I didn't have a washing machine for a while (until I was gifted a used one) and I washed by hand in the bathtub. It was just me so it wasn't a lot of work but I was really glad when I got a washing machine again.

And also my sewing machine. It's so much faster than handsewing, it's neater and the stitches are stronger.

*Washing machine: so much more efficient than washing everything by hand
*electric pressure cooker: so much easier and faster to make stock from bones and cook dry beans perfectly
*stand mixer: makes it easy to bake husband’s birthday angel food cake from scratch or make hundreds of holiday cookies without wondering if my arm might fall off
*smartphone: a tiny pocket computer that replaces my grocery list, notepad, paper maps, grocery flyers, camera, audio recorder, and various other things that would go in my purse or travel bag

I don't have a lot that would fit into that category, but I'll go with my robo-advisor investment account that fully automates my investing, along with the nice pastry cutter my boyfriend got me many years ago that I use at least weekly (I used to use a fork or two knives).

I love my soup maker. It makes fresh soup in under half an hour. It does all the cooking and blending and it's easy to clean.

I also love my Waterpik water flosser. I hated flossing with floss or interdental brushes, and I'd often forget to do it. The water flosser is always ready to use in my bathroom and just makes the entire process quick and easy.

Be very wary of these comparisons as they are usually made with totally unfair criteria. The article you linked as so often with dishwasher comparisons, do so with someone just running the hot tap and washing their dishes under it - not filling up a bowl and washing everything in that. They also only compare a very specific number of items to obtain a 'sweet-spot' in the dishwashers favour. They also often concentrate on water usage and accidentally forget about the electric motor(s) energy use. They never, ever mention the cost of manufacture of the item itself.

Should also take into account dishwashers have killed the occasional person when they trip and land on upturned knifes and of course the few hundred fires dishwashers start every year and that dishwashers gasket tends to get fungus and other nasties growing all over it.

That said - they are very impressive pieces of engineering - just wanted to say beware of reading articles from dishwasher manufacturers or articles where they have drawn their comparison data from manufacturers !

DH told me yesterday that he really thinks the dishwasher was the best investment for his well-being that we have bought.

On my list:
- Kindle (more comfortable to hold when reading than paper books in my opinion and you can carry a lot of books with you)
- Car (gives great flexibility compared to only walking/biking/public transport)
- Fridge and freezer (also hard to imitate in summer circumstances)
- Washing machine (hand washing is a lot of fuss and difficult in the cold season)
- Oven (hard to imitate the functionality, although not impossible)

It's not so much labor-reducing as it is labor-easier-ing, but my house came with a battery lawnmower (Ego 56v).  It's light, it's quiet, doesn't smell, and requires no engine maintenance (fuel, oil changes, winterizing, etc).  Coming from a childhood of gas powered mowers, it's amazing.

They also only compare a very specific number of items to obtain a 'sweet-spot' in the dishwashers favour. They also often concentrate on water usage and accidentally forget about the electric motor(s) energy use. They never, ever mention the cost of manufacture of the item itself.

My LG uses 3.7 gallons per load. Our family of 4 eats all meals at home, and we typically do one load of dishes per day. Could I hand clean a full day of dishes using less than 4 gallons of water? Yes, if I'm super fastidious. But this takes forever and, to be honest, either the dishes aren't going to really get clean (e.g. they are "camping clean"), or I'm going to get lazy and use a lot more water.

Also, the electric motors on these things are quite small and use a tiny amount of electricity. Most of the energy consumption goes to heating the water, which improves the effectiveness of the cleaning. My EnergyStar dishwasher uses ~0.5kWh per load, which is a very small amount. For comparison, this is about the amount of energy my coffee maker uses if I leave the warming plate on for 1 hour, or about the same as running an electric hot plate for 20 minutes.

Should also take into account dishwashers have killed the occasional person when they trip and land on upturned knifes and of course the few hundred fires dishwashers start every year and that dishwashers gasket tends to get fungus and other nasties growing all over it.

LOL, killer dishwashers :) Tripping and falling on an upturned knife in my dishwasher, or my dishwasher catching fire, are so low on my list of safety concerns that I don't even consider these worth the brain space. I'm much more concerned, for good reasons, with drivers who may kill me while riding my bike around town, and the dangers related to earthquakes.

That said - they are very impressive pieces of engineering - just wanted to say beware of reading articles from dishwasher manufacturers or articles where they have drawn their comparison data from manufacturers !

And I would say, beware assumptions that doing something manually, or the old fashioned way, is always better or more virtuous. Certainly dishwashers of old were wildly inefficient, but the newer EnergyStar models are really quite good. And if having a dishwasher means you eat in more often w/o disposable containers/cutlery (e.g. to-go boxes, etc.) then it's a win-win. For the vast vast majority of people, including Mustacians, a dishwasher is a no brainier in terms of efficiency and time savings.

I'd be willing to bet that many more people die after slipping in the shower than on knives in dishwashers.

I bet more people cut themselves handwashing knives than they do by falling on open dishwasher doors, too.

That said, I do hand-wash my knives anyway.

I saw that I interpreted the question wrong. I thought modern devices, not labor saving. Some items on my list had nothing to do with saving labor.

The chainsaw is a good labor saver when we need to cut firewood.

Don't tell me you not only use a dishwasher, but a coffee maker and a warming plate too ? Have you no shame man ??

For killer appliances, toasters are much worse and kill a couple of people every single day !

Missed adding my own favourite labour saving devices... other than those already mentioned, I think I would add grocery delivery from my supermarket. I pay a 6 monthly fee and get free deliveries on 3 specific days of the week... works out at about £3 per weekly shop. As I work from home, being around at those times is no problem and I don't get suckered in by various deals in store. Probably only saves me a hour a week or so -- but it is awesome to have the supermarket turn up at my door.

Chiming in from the trenches in caring for a newborn: amen on birth control saving labor!

**

With little kids underfoot I’ve been really pleased with a robot vacuum cleaner. Saves me sweeping 2x daily and my floors are way cleaner. I can also be much more relaxed at dinner because I don’t need to get worked up about all the crumbs falling on the ground, because I know it won’t be my job later to clean them all up.

I am informed by my best friend that in her case, a dishwasher was way less expensive than a divorce.

I have the full range of appliances and love them, but one of my favorites, as a short person, is an extended grabber thing. I think they were originally designed for people with impaired mobility, but it makes my day every time I swoop something off a high shelf without having to drag out the stepstool. In a small-footprint condo, vertical storage is key!

I live in my truck camper, so the only electric devices I have aside from a laptop and smartphone, are my electric toothbrush and razor. The only things I wish I could have are a hand-held immersion blender and a Gaggia espresso machine.

Amen.

Our old house had a wall heater that heated the top half of half of the house. Considering we are short, having warm ceilings and cold floors didn’t go over so well.

Our current house has central heat that heats everything. Winning.

Mandolin, Google maps-so much joy now that it knows in real time when my bus/train is coming and can tell me the best mode of transport for arrival time. I also love kayak and other airline comparison websites and of course index funds, must have been a major time waster diversifying your investments in the old days.

Years back I lived in a camper on the back of my truck for a year.  For the first half of that time the electric pump did not work, so I hung a backpacking water bladder from a hook for doing dishes.  I was amazed that with care I could wash all my dishes from making a proper dinner (pot, plate, knife, couple bowls, utensils, etc) with about 1 quart of water.  Often I did not have hookups, so the drain went into a gallon jug, and boy howdy was that some nasty looking water.

With all that said, I have to admit that I am pretty sure that doing dishes at home I would be pretty close to the ~4-6 gallons of water to wash a dishwasher's load of dishes by hand, likely worse.

We have an oven and a combi microwave that can be used as an oven. In our previous house I often missed the second oven.

Heard a podcast about the washing machine - when it entered the households around back in the day it wasn't actually that much of a time-saver. What happened was that people just started washing their clothes a lot more often than before and ended up spending pretty much the same amount of time on the activity as when they had to do it by hand.

Heard a podcast about the washing machine - when it entered the households around back in the day it wasn't actually that much of a time-saver. What happened was that people just started washing their clothes a lot more often than before and ended up spending pretty much the same amount of time on the activity as when they had to do it by hand.

Yes, I understand that people in the past walked around in the same shirt for a week at least. That might be one of the reasons why shirts were wider in the past? Then they don't sit tight in your arm pits and maybe absorb less smell. In those days people probably didn't have 24 hour antiperspirants either.

Old washing machines didn't have a built in centrifuge, so you had to transfer the garments halfway to a centrifuge thing. Nowadays, with machines that produce clean and half-dried clothes, and a tumble dry beside it and no/low-ironing clothes (we use a lot less cotton and linnen than in the past), it is not much work anymore. Line drying is also a good way to prevent ironing, but it is a bit time consuming.

I'd be willing to bet that many more people die after slipping in the shower than on knives in dishwashers.

I bet more people cut themselves handwashing knives than they do by falling on open dishwasher doors, too.

That said, I do hand-wash my knives anyway.

Very simple solution.  I always put knives pointed side down into the dishwasher.  Common sense.

My Norelco shaver.  It's faster than shaving cream and a razor, makes it easier to shave my head daily, and the longevity has been fantastic on the two I've had over the past 5 years.

My $10 kitchen scale.  Making recipes by weight reduces the measuring cups and spoons that I need to use (and later clean).  Also a lot more accurate than measuring by volume.

KitchenAid 5-plus stand mixer. If I had to knead all my dough by hand, I'd make bread a lot less often than I do.  I make better and healthier bread than I can buy, and it is the only way for me to have things like bagels, baguette, and croissant that just aren't available where I live.

Just be very wary of them if you have a dog.  Especially one that might poop inside the house.

Does make for a very funny story afterward.

Computers.

I've seen audit workpapers from before we did them electronically, and I know that I would not have been an auditor very long.
