Facebook redirects on trying to read an article?
« on: February 07, 2013, 05:40:29 PM »
Hey all,

I'm having issues reading MMM articles at the moment - it looks like it is automatically trying to redirect to Facebook to authenticate/sign in?

Is anyone else getting the same issue?

Cheers,

Jonathan

Not happening here.

If I go to http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/ and click on the titles of the articles, it takes me straight to the articles.

Can you describe a little more about what you're doing step by step so we can try to reproduce (or is it what I said exactly, but for you it's taking you to Facebook)?

Have you tried it in other browsers?  Is it still doing it?  What about other devices/computers?

Welcome, by the way, glad to have you here.  :)

Thanks for the reply - it looks like it was an intermittent glitch.

I'm a web developer, so have some background debugging similar issues.
What I was seeing was when I loaded an article in a new tab in Chrome, it would load correctly, but then would redirect to a Facebook URL with the MMM article URL as one of the parameters, as if it was trying to integrate some plugin or feed from that site. It would then get an 'Authentication failed' error message and stay on the Facebook page.

Seems to be working okay again now anyway.

I also got a random CMS database looking error message when I was trying to reply to your post earlier - I must be cursed today :) Screenshot attached:

This happened to me in chrome today when going from an e-mail link to an article on a website (not MMM). I signed out of Facebook and everything worked fine.

I've seen this a few times, seems to happen when MMM servers get overloaded with traffic.

I might suggest you disable facebook scripting (and twitter, google, pinterest, etc)  on pages that are not facebook.com.  This is a bit of a privacy issue and also a big target for security issues (either done accidentally or by a badguy on purpose).

Look at NoScript as a browser plugin and set up Application Browser Enforcing for these common zones.  (See http://noscript.net/faq#qa8_10).

Thanks for the info - I didn't expect to receive such comprehensive replies.
It looks like it was a Facebook issue, not a MMM issue.

Not really.  The fact that facebook is able to block another site (MMM, for example) is a problem with that site.  In particular, it is a real security and privacy issue of not understanding how the facebook "Like" stuff works.  In effect, one site is giving a third party (in this instance facebook) the ability to track every visit and potentially interrupt all traffic.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
