Perhaps the value of the experience was in strengthening the link with the colleague. If he's so successful, perhaps there's enough to be learned from him to make the meal seem a bargain.

very good point.  I like to think that we both learned something from each other.

Yup. I've done the fine dining thing a few times in my life, and never been impressed. Maybe I'm just too much of a savage barbarian to appreciate it, but I greatly prefer a good homemade pot pie or pizza to anything  I'd ever get in a fancy restaurant.

I don't get the appeal of "fine dining" either.

To me, it means paying a lot of money, for a tiny portion, in an uncomfortable/pretentious setting, while wearing uncomfortable clothing, in an uptight atmosphere where you can't relax.  The food may (or may not) be "special."

No matter how many millions I have, I'll never choose that over pizza and beer.

Occasionally, I get invited to "fine dining."  I'm usually pretty good at coming up with excuses to avoid it, but a few times a year, I get roped into it.

I consider it a chore only slightly less unpleasant than visiting the dentist or filling out my tax forms.

I hate going to pretentious places that make me choose between wearing shirts or shoes...

Went to quite a few fancy restaurants over the years, not value for money in my book, I could see how hedonistic adaption would come into play quite quickly in that setting.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
