Excited! Over 50% savings rate!
« on: January 01, 2017, 04:30:45 PM »
So, I'm only mildly mustachian. Mostly my husband and I are just naturally quasi frugal. We don't have a budget and just buy whatever we want, for instance- but both of us hate being spendypants so it typically works out well.

I just calculated our savings rate (based on: 401K/403b/IRA contributions, taxable investment contributions, and increase in cash savings divided by our gross income) and we are just a bit over 50%!

We've also seen a bit of growth in the various accounts and have about 40% equity in our (way too big) house, so our net worth also grew pretty well this year.

I'm just really excited to see we are putting away one of our incomes! (We make nearly the same amount)

The forum got me to move my taxable accounts from tiaa cref to vanguard, and also to up our retirement accounts from 13% to 20%. Still a few thousand to go before they are maxed though. DH likes the taxable accounts knowing the money can be accessed now, even if it's a bit illogical.

We've also halved our cash savings in favor of more investment- that was hard, but I think this forum convinced me of the cost of cash...  Though we still have way more in a bank account than it sounds like many people here would do.

DH loves to bike, so he's been biking to work for years. He got hit this summer by a woman running through a blinking yellow when he had a green though, so he hasn't done that since the summer. That also took all (small) thoughts of him doing daycare drop off with a trailer next year off the table.  We'll also recoup some money when we file the insurance claim, but he is still having problems so hasn't finished treatment yet.

Sorry I didn't check your post count and just assumed you were new! Over 50% savings rate, that is unbelievable.

And the growth in your accounts.

I used to think 401Ks were gambling but our company is offering them this year and if it weren't for the forum, I wouldn't be participating.
And I'd not have any nest egg except much less stored away in a safe in the house in the form of cash. Donating 30% of my income for one year then 50% the next year, then 100%. This is for one paycheck of just 18K but it all helps. I don't have expensive tastes whatsoever, live a simple life and always will. Starting late, even with a simple lifestyle, I have alot to save$$  We also just begun flipping real estate and our first buy is a real gem. If we can make just a little tax free income, I can go onto saving some of my second paycheck ( 10K yr)

Congrats my fellow Midwesterner!  Don't worry too much about the cash, go in as you're comfortable.  Rate of return during accumulation means much less when you're saving at outstanding rates!

That's awesome! Wait till you min max it completely. I've been sitting at 68.5% for two and a half years now. I can't seem to make it budget one. more. inch. 2017 will be the year of the second job. at least that's what it's looking like.

We'll have a baby (god, I hope) in daycare next year, so I expect the rate will go down, but so will the "hey, let's go to Montreal for the weekend" so maybe it will even out...

Awesome stuff!

In total agreement that baby = increased expenses (and decreased income for ny household) but totally worth it :-)
