Was Pete Hacked?
« on: April 23, 2024, 06:40:08 PM »
I'm sorry if this shouldn't be posted here. I've not visited the forum in a long time, but recently was on here reading about the Robinhood 3% IRA bonus. Tried to post in off-topic, but don't have 100 posts so...

I managed to FIRE largely thanks to Pete's blog about 15 months ago the day I turned 40. Anyway, I was really surprised this morning (live in Japan) to receive a message request from Pete of all people. I did a double-take and the profile seems like it is really him, but I have no idea or reason he'd contact me. I suspect he may have been hacked, but no idea. Of course if it is really Pete, man, I'm a huge fan, so that would be cool. I sort of want to call him up and see who answers. I imagine although he's not on the forums much there are some people here who know him in real life. Just trying to give him a heads up in case he was hacked. Tried to message him on Instagram, but I guess I'm blocked from that. Cheers!

**EDIT** Profile link is here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008936194752
Looks like it's a duplicate profile for scamming purposes? Obviously Pete's not from Naples, Italy and doesn't live in Homedale, ID.

Not hacked.  Just impersonated.

Real Pete on Facebook below.

Unfortunately, some scam shop has you as a live contact now, so expect to be contacted by more "old friends."

I remember someone posting within the last few months about a Pete impersonator. He knew quite a bit about him and they had an investment discussion going on. I think the impersonator was trying to get the forum member to’invest’ in something, but I can’t remember details.

Thanks for sharing that. Yeah weird. I have liked and follow Pete's actual MMM Facebook which I assume is how the guy contacted me. I have my Facebook profile fairly locked down, which doesn't allow friend requests from anyone who's not a friend of a friend which I guess is why he didn't send me one. I assumed it was a scam, but was curious as it was well done.

I knew a military dude on Facebook whose photos were constantly being stolen to create fake accounts, typically to romance and swindle unsuspecting and lonely women. He kept reporting the accounts when he found them, but there was an inexhaustible supply. Literally dozens and dozens.

Once you post photos of yourself online, there's not much you can do to prevent scammers from setting up fake accounts with them. But at least it doesn't necessarily indicate an issue with your account security.

I thought Pete was hacked the other day when he posted he was shocked that people are still buying those obsolete gasoline cars. https://x.com/mrmoneymustache/status/1781382884236144947

That sounds like Pete to me. He’s also been a fan of higher efficiency, value, and limited, but quality possessions. He also cares about the world and the environment. Given the state of the climate and the EV options now available, including used EVs, there really is no reason for most folks to ever buy ICE again.
