Electric scooter for commuting to work - good options?
« on: September 10, 2015, 11:49:45 AM »
I am interested in getting an electric kick-type scooter for work commuting. I would really like to find one that can be powered both by the electric power as well as "kicking" so you if you run out of juice you're not stranded. I also would like it to be light/portable enough that I could fold it up and fit it in my hatchback car if needed. It sure would be handy to have something like this when I need to leave my car at the mechanic and then wouldn't have to find a ride home. I would also like find one that can go at least 7 miles on a single charge (one way to work) and be easy to take inside my office with me to plug in.

And I'd like to find one under $500. I would consider up to $1000 if it was really good, though. Anyone have experience with electric scooters you'd like to share?

What about an ebike? There are several threads about those on here.

If I could find an ebike that is around $500 and that would fold or otherwise fit in my car, I'd be game for that.

How about an electric unicycle.  Saw a guy flying down the sidewalk in London on one of these a couple months ago.

You're not going to find something "good" for under $500.  You might find "cheap Chinese junk that runs a few times" for under $500 shipped.

A folding ebike sounds like a good option, but you'll need to spend more on it to get something that folds.  If folding isn't a requirement and you can do work yourself, a competent commuter ebike for a flat area, for under $1000, is feasible.

Oh my gosh, not sure I could balance on that with my purse for 7 miles...

a co-worker just got a boosted board, and is enjoying it so far.  I think the range is something like 7 miles.

Not sure it would be worth the $1k price tag, but it's pretty cool, and very portable.

I bought a used ebike for $315 CDN for my daughter's birthday. It came with a new battery, a small rear rack, and front/rear lights. She uses it to commute daily and so far, she's totally happy with it. The nice thing about an ebike is that it doesn't require a drivers licence or registration. Personal insurance is optional but not mandatory. Another advantage for her is that she must take a ferry regularly, and the fare is the same for passengers with bikes/ebikes and a foot passenger, contrary to electric/gas scooters and motorcycles who have to pay extra.
