Eighteen good reasons to be a Mustachian and Retire Early
« on: February 19, 2013, 01:02:44 PM »
From the Business Insider:
http://www.businessinsider.com/18-ways-your-office-job-is-destroying-your-body-2013-2

There are some silly things in here like (germs on keyboards and exposure to sick people).  At first I thought the treadmill desk was stupid until I turned it into a metaphor for this type of working life!

Some of the worst ones in my view for the typical office job are:
1) Sitting most or all day
2) Bad air quality
3) Long work days
4) Being bored
5) Various RSI injuries
6) Chronic and Acute Stress
7) Crap food

Some of these are certainly mitigated by Mustachians, like 7).  However, some of these are out of personal control.  Things like exercise help to mitigate the effects but they do not eliminate the effects.  The best thing?  Set your course full speed ahead to financially independent retirement!

Thanks for sharing.  I work part-time now and feel much better than I did when I worked full-time.  Also, walking or cycling to work does help.

Fortunately my job is not boring.  That would make me nuts!

Depressing =( I'm about to enter a career where 10 hours days are considered the norm and it's odd to not work at least one weekend a month...and definitely no "overtime" compensation. Any wonder that I stumbled onto this website!?!

Luckily I'm only 26 - hopefully have 75k student debt paid off by 28/29, then hopefully get full-time job...then save save save and fingers crossed for freedom 40!

Good luck!  I traded early FI for working part-time seven years ago.  I might have been retired by now if I'd kept working full-time, but the stress might have killed me.  I'm 44 though.  My body could handle stress better in my twenties.

Yet none of those things are inherent in working, only in the working conditions some people will accept.  One good reason for becoming FI is that you no longer have to accept them.  So I can, for instance, eat breakfast and work for a couple of hours, take an hour or so to go out in the garden, pull some weeds and plant another row of peas, work a couple more hours, bike to the library & store, work a couple more hours...  Pretty soon I'll be taking the dogs for a hike or bike ride, then maybe work a couple more hours.

Then there's your #4.  Without work, or some similar source of mental challenge, I would get so effing bored.

Or just don't work an office job.

Or work one where you go and do what you need to get done, then leave. And arrange your space to let you be most effective and to avoid sitting in one place for long periods.

Just to be a dick...

1) Standing desk.
2) I'd say open a window, but unless you're in an old office building... nope. Huh. Printers/copiers are the worst offenders; ours are hidden away in their own room with the door closed.
3) ... yeah, it sucks.
4) Get a more interesting office job? They do exist.
5) Fuck, yeah. I've got 'em. You win. (see: standing desk. Get an ergonomic keyboard. Don't let it happen to you!)
6) A proper Stoic outlook can help with this, but yes. It's pretty much an unavoidable part of wage slavery.
7) I eat marvelously, darhling. If you pack your lunch (and by god, you should!) that's all on you.

I was only able to get smart-ass contrarian answers for ~4/7 -- guess that's why I'm here.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
