Ed Begley Jr.'s "Living with Ed" and Mustachianism
« on: June 28, 2016, 01:34:28 PM »
I couldn't find Ed Begley Jr.'s old HGTV/Planet Green show "Living with Ed" on any streaming service, so I used an Amazon gift card I had lying around to purchase a copy of the DVDs for $9 (including S/H.) Anybody else ever watch this show? It's a goofy reality show about Ed Begley Jr.'s family and how they live an environmentally friendly lifestyle. I used to watch it back when I paid for satellite TV in the late 2000s and it really fits in with the Mustachian lifestyle, now that I'm watching it again.

Some of Ed's good tips:

1.) Grow your own food on your own property. His entire backyard is filled with vegetable plants and fruit trees, which saves him on food bills.

2.) Use rain barrels to catch runoff from your roof and use that to water your garden. Saves on the water bill.

3.) Recycle your food with a compost bin to make your own soil for your garden. Basically free fertile soil for your plants.

4.) Make your own electricity with solar panels. The panels pay for themselves pretty quickly and then you have free electricity for 20 years or more.

5.) Walk or ride a bicycle. It's healthier for your body than driving a car and it costs nothing.

6.) Drive an electric car. If you combine this with the solar panels, then you basically get free fuel for your car for life and electric cars last much, much longer than ICE cars.

7.) Use weather-stripping on your doors and windows. Saves you money on heating and cooling your house.

8.) Use CFLs or LED bulbs. Saves lots of money on your electric bill.

9.) Replace your thermostat with a more high-tech digital model. Helps you more accurately control the temperature inside your house and keep your furnace/AC from running all the time.

10.) Eat more vegetables and less meat. It costs a lot less money.

Ed Begley Jr. does all these things with the intention of reducing his family's environmental impact, but it really strikes me that an environmentally friendly lifestyle really keeps the green in your pocket. Anybody else watch this show?

We use to watch and enjoy that show back in the day.  Only uncomfortable part was the interactions between Ed and his wife which I think was suppose to be funny, but was rather awkward.

His friendly rivalry with his neighbor down the alley, Bill Nye, the Science Guy, was kind of funny.  The young blonde starlet wife not so much.  Their daughter looked like her dad and was not into clothes or her mom's other frivolous hobbies.

I wish they made more episodes, especially with Bill Nye (and without the wife).

It would be interesting to see these folks now.  Are the Begleys still married?  What happened to the kid?  Who else moved to their alley?

The last I heard from them was a web series called "On Begley Street" that they made with funding from a Kickstarter campaign. It was all about designing the perfect eco-friendly house to replace their house from their old show. They ran into some environmental clean-up problems and the show didn't continue, but they were successful in creating their ecotopia from what I've read in the news. They even have a massive cistern underneath their new house that supplies their house with thousands of gallons of stored collected rainwater. It's incredible.

Rachelle really played things up for the cameras to manufacture drama for the old show. In real life, she's as much of an environmentalist as Ed. She's just a little more interested in making green living stylish as well. They actually first met at an environmental activist fundraiser back in the day.

Their daughter Hayden is now 16 years old which makes me feel like I'm about a thousand years old now.

I loved that show. There was one episode where he wanted toast but he had the toaster hooked up to a stationary bicycle somehow so he had to pedal for awhile to make the toast. I remember reading at the time that the idea to hook up health club aerobic machines to capture energy was impractical. I was glad Ed Begley did not read that article.

His vegetable garden front yard was a wreck in the middle of what had to be a very nice neighborhood. Wonder if there was any friction with the neighbors.

Wow, thanks for sharing that. Ed Begley Jr.'s new house is amazing. Southern California is in a years-long drought and he has all the water he needs because he is using what Mother Earth gives him for free. Great stuff.

He has a Twitter account as well.  Apparently they just got the certificate of occupancy for the house.

Nice that it is operationally eco-friendly, but there is a lot of money and materials in that structure.

Anybody got a link that to a site that isn't infested with nearly 30 different ad and tracking networks?

Might be hard to do that, since it was an exclusive live report from KTLA TV.
