Dying for a side hustle, but now what?
« on: March 25, 2017, 06:35:22 PM »
For the last year or so, I have really been wanting to make some cash on the side, but I'm stuck. I just can't think of any skills I have that are in demand. I was recently just approved to be a Lyft driver, but that's my only real idea right now which might be laughable depending on who you are. Does anyone have any side hustles that took them awhile to find that 'aha' moment?

I work every other month in the O&G industry, which affords me every other month completely off.  Since its hard to do a standard side hustle that would allow me to work every other month I had to be inventive.  I have always liked going to yard sales and flea markets and purchasing little things for myself, so I decided to rent a booth at a local antique mall and resell items I purchase at yard sales and flea markets.  I am able to turn a hobby into $400-600/mo profit.  Ive been doing this for 8 months and im now looking to get a 2nd booth at a different antique mall.

One piece of advice I would give is to figure out what available hours you have in a day/week/month to devote to a side hustle without taking away from your relax time.  Then look for inventive ways to best work within those hours.

My wife and I also use Rover.com and watch peoples dogs.  We set our cost at $25/day and we are already at home watching our own dog, why not watch another one, get paid, and entertain my dog.  It also fully pays for dog food, cat food, heartworm pills and vet visits.

Is there enough margin as a Lyft driver to actually be worthwhile once you figure the accelerated depreciation and maintenance on your car?

Speaking American/British-accented English is a skill that many people are willing to pay for. There are online private tutoring companies that pay up to $20/hour.

Don't rule out a traditional part-time job.

There are retailers, for example, that are open 6-7 days a week, but their employees only want to work 5 days a week, which is the sort of scheduling havoc you can help them with.

Check with your local temp agencies about evening or weekend shift gigs. Side benefits include networking at lots of local companies and lots of learning experiences for software, business processes, etc.
