I'm a big fan of namecheap.com just for the price. It includes free DNS serving.

I use GoDaddy and their included name server. They used to be one of the cheapest but not so much anymore so I should really look into transferring the 10 or so names I still have. Used to host with them long ago but it didn't go well so we moved all that way but kept the names there. These days, most are just used for email that I have forwarding to GMail from a little Linode.

I use name.com because they have free WHOIS privacy (with promo code).

I wouldn't buy a domain until I knew where I would host it (assuming you're actually going to put something on it) - because:
a) they may provide a deal to rent/host at the same place, and
b) it is so much easier to pay one bill than keep track of separate hosting and domain accounts.

As a counterpoint if you get fed up with your web host it is much less hassle to move to a new one if you don't have to move your domain name(s) as well.

I don’t know what it is about the domain name business, but most sellers are just super-sleazy (Godaddy chief among them). I buy mine from iwantmyname.com Their pricing is slightly higher than the market competition, but I find it worth it to not deal with the 900 upsell attempts every time I sign in.

I always use Google Domains. Easy to use interface, cheap, no up-selling, and includes private registration.

+1 for google domains. It's only a couple bucks more expensive than the "bargain basement" places... But the interface and ease of use is sooo worth it.  (I previously used GoDaddy, and HOLY SHIT their web page is confusing, wading through all of the up-sells.)

I have used Go daddy & namescheap, but they aren't good.

I switched to Google Domains last year and it's perfect. Simple, easy, cheap, and private by default. Everything I need.

+1 for Namecheap. I host my sites with Linode on a $5 box.
