I think this is really interesting.  I always do all of my finances on the last day of the month.  I think of it as looking back on my progress that month.

Why does the 1st make more sense to everyone else here?

In my case, I use YNAB, so new budget for the month and I also manually update my networth on the first since it shows where my investments are at the day before  :)

I pay a mortgage and a student loan.  By paying on the first day of the month, I minimize interest payments, which are low anyway, but now I'm in the habit.

I get paid once a month, on the first.

We don't have a monthly budget, so day of the month is irrelevant to us.

I pay credit cards on the 1st of the month, and anything in the bank account over the buffer I always keep in there will go into the investment account.  This makes it a bit of a game for me to see if I "won" last month where the prize is extra investing.  I also play another game starting at the 1st of the month where I see how long I can go before I buy food from somewhere other than the grocery store.  The worst part of my budget is eating out, so this encourages me to bring lunch to work and make dinner at home.  This game has saved me so much money haha.

Same here, it would be great if my networth had gone up and the stocks were on sale. So far, only the stocks were on sale, my net worth on the other hand..... :(

My income and recurring expenses are both a mix of monthly and biweekly with cycles that vary by account, and some change month to month (drill could be the 1st weekend one month, the last of another). I track all income and costs on one continuous spreadsheet, and the first is just a day like any other.

All of my investments, payroll, savings, etc., are automated. Bills I can't automate come at various times of the month. I just pay them when I take them out of the mailbox. I rarely know or care what today's date is.

I get my paycheck from work on the last day of the month and the 1st is when all my tenants pay me. So I look forward to this day very much. :)

I neither look forward to it nor dread it.  There's nothing special about the first of the month for us.  Just another day.

I'm kind of a fan of the 1st. All bills are on auto pay scheduled within the first two weeks. Wife gets paid monthly and I'm biweekly. Wife's pay gets deposited over night before the 1st, retirement contributions go in and are settled by EOB, and mortgage goes through (and we like the mortgage price)! So basically the 1st is marked by a solid increase in NW.

This is our situation as well, so on about the 3rd or 4th and all the dust has cleared and we can marvel monthly at the increase in our NW.  Good times....

My leave accrues monthly... so on the 1st of every month I get another chunk of future vacation! Always nice.

I just started using YNAB and I think may come to like it for that reason as well...

Ill second that, its another chance to improve spending :)

I'll all second all my bills are on auto pay so they happen throughout the month.

I do however look forward to paying my student loans which I do manually. I am impatient so I look forward to paying off huge chunks and watching my monthly liabilities go down.

Picking up a small amount of cash and depositing it at your bank is a pain?

It's a full hour each, with drive time. One month, I had to make the trip four different times.
We're working on getting it down to one coordinated trip for everyone who wants to pay cash, and giving the others SASE's to mail checks.

I work in accounting so the first it s mixed blessing. On the one hand, the company starts the close process on the first so I'll be staying later than I'd like.

On the other, I close MY books on the first of the month (or the second or third, often during lunch breaks at work) which always makes me super excited cause I have new information to put in the spreadsheet.

The rest of the month it just kind of sits there, tempting me, making me wish I had more data to add. Sometimes I just stare at it trying to think of ways to add more graphs or create new pivot tables.

Yes! The first of the month is when I take a look at all our accounts and calculate net worth for tracking purposes. Nice to see us getting closer to our goal (unless the markets take a dump, but then I'm happy anyway since we might get to buy in cheaper on the next purchase).

I was about to say the same thing - I like the first of the month because it's when I "allow myself" to update my net worth spreadsheet.

Yes, this.

Though truthfully, I update it weekly - if not more - but the cells stay highlighted until the first of the month when I can make it "official".  I really need to get better at doing it once a month.

This month, I'm really looking forward to the 8th.  That's when my check for August should clear, so that's when I'll run the budget.  Pay the mortgage, make investments, allocate savings for various categories.  Then at the end I'll get to tally up everything and see how the net worth looks.  Basically 30 to 60 minutes of personal-finance-nerd nirvana.
