Cut phone, cut cable but looking for some ideas
« on: December 16, 2017, 03:09:58 AM »
So since I have been here for 4+ years I have really changed my life for the good. Downsizing the house, buying used cars, cut grocery bill down to a third ya da da but with 4 kids I was willing to give pause in doing so with Phone and Tv. Well I got finally tired of that so I cut my phone bill this week by at least 115$ a month and got all new phones (6) and free Hulu and yesterday I cut my cable kept the wifi for now with 100 gbs whatevery there called. Anyhow so that now too is cut to 1/3 of what it was but since i didnt sign a contract I know that I can still get a better deal on my wifi so I am going to shop that more and I currently have netflix which I pay for and Hulu for free ( well not really its free with phones so your paying something).  So my question (s) is we are a big wifi user and at times there is 6 of us at home usually 4. What providers are in or should be in my area that are cheaper than Spectrum/Time Warner?and what do I need. I had the 50 mgbs and worked fine but said I had to buy the 100 since now I am not part of a package. Kinda became a battle on the phone and I hate these companies so I want to get out from under them.

The second question is I do need to find something with sports and particularly soccer first then football then basketball. We stream alot of games but in my budget if there is any bundle out there that includes one or two of these I would do it since will only be for another year or two and I have cut alot out so much. My one DS said he would like the MLS package for his Birthday BUT i dont wan that to be a birthday present and besides his Birthday is in march. 3 out of 4 my kids really dont ask for much and havent been really effected at all by the things we have cut out because we still do alot but within my Fire'd allotment.

So any ideas of things I might look at? One other thing we are currently receiving the free prime amazon and thats really no better than one you get with Netflix or Hulu based on what shows you like or dislike. Seems in time more stuff with all the mergers will becoming down the pipeline like Disney buying Fox now but Sports for now....anything?

I had a Kodi box (Raspberry Pi 2), but (I) was never very good with the interface. I have a friend that is more technical or spends the youtube time needed to understand it. It is a streaming system with everything you would want to watch. Kodi can also be used on your computer. I have to add, Kodi is open source and the leader moved on to the next greatest, this means the others who were keeping the system updated have slowed, because why spend time working for free on a system that will be overtaken with something better. It is still useful, but I expect an upgrade in the future.
I recently bought an Amazon Firestick, I got it on sale for $24.99. I did have to get Amazon Prime for $99 in order to get the Prime Video. It has loads of TV shows and Movies. It is easy to use, you can add other feeds, so far I have added Terrarium TV and Mobdro. You can even put Kodi on it.
If you don't mind a learning curve, google Kodi and see were it's at and look at a couple youtube videos about Kodi.

Never heard of that one (kodi) , will look into it. Were trying out the free trial on Amazon. Watched the Bosch Series that was good. But doubt will keep it. Have Netflix we pay for and Hulu for free so really looking for something with sports. If I cant find that then I will throw and antenna up and call it a day!  Thanks!

MLS live is only 7.99/year https://live.mlssoccer.com

Hulu with Live TV has a ton of sports channels and also other channels like HGTV, MSNBC, and CNN. It’s also comes with dvr.  https://www.hulu.com/live-tv

YouTubeTV at $35 is competitive, but missing common channels like CNN and HGTV https://tv.youtube.com

I wasn’t impressed with Sling TV, because they have two packages and lots of optional add-ons. They cleverly make some popular networks on one but not both packages, to encourage you to buy both. So while theoretically you could pay as little as $20/month, in the end I think Hulu with Live TV or YouTubeTV come out cheaper for a comparable amount of channels as getting both packages on Sling.
Plus dvr is $5 extra. https://www.sling.com

DirectTV Now is another option at $35 with no dvr. I think they have less sports and channels at their $35 package than Hulu or YouTube. But you can add HBO for only $5/month whereas it’s $15/month extra with Hulu. https://www.directvnow.com/

Just do some comparison shopping based on the channels you want. Although you should look into a digital antenna as an even cheaper option to streaming cable (read free after you pay $15-20for the antenna)  because you can get you local sports (whatever nfl, baseball, basketball etc team normally plays on your local channels) on the antenna.

Here's a Mobdro list of their sports channels.

I starting to explore further in Mobdro.
I'm having games popup and looking for a solution other than
backing out and starting again.

I tried Youtube TV and it was pretty good.  But the $35 price is what put me off it.  Currently use regular Youtube with CNN feeds, my broker has a CNBC feed, OTA antenna with a capture device for a DVR, the library for movies and shows, Redbox now an then.  Considering trying Netflix for a few months then cancelling.

Thank you all.  Soccer, NBA and Football in that order. Kids cant live without soccer. I am going to take all your advice and look through them. I did check out sling today but that gets up to as well at least 30$ to buy the extra channels because one package comes with Fox and one comes with all the Espn channels. Be curious what happens since Disney Friday announced to buy Fox and already owns Espn.  Next year everything could really change.
