Not a totally crappy day, but I woke up with a sinus headache that hasn't gone away, despite ibuprofen and hot beverages. I can feel the pressure behind my eyes and cheekbones and even above my upper teeth and all I want to do is sleep.

That's no fun at all. I get this quite often.

I have a small spray bottle that I fill most days with dilute salt in water. I spray this up my nose every few hours and it keeps sinuses clear. This seems to work much better long-term than the commercial nose sprays.

Just make sure not to use tap water.

Why not?

Because there can be nasty things in tap water, despite the water treatment process. Tap water is ok to drink, but squirting it into body cavities is not the best idea. Especially cavities near your brain.

You should boil water, leave to cool, add salt and then squirt up your nose.

Regards, a former microbiologist.

^What he said.

It probably won't kill you, but it could.

OK, good point. That is a reason I never considered. I think our local tap water is better than the public swimming pool where I swim twice weekly. It certainly tasted more heavily chlorinated. :-)

You shouldn't spray pool water up your nose either ;)

Because of brain eating amoeba.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naegleria_fowleri

Allegedly they can potentially live in already treated and safe drinking water.  Can't infect you from drinking it, but get it into your sinuses and it can cross into your brain, and uh, eat your brain I guess.

It seems to be rare, but still a possibility.

I woke up this morning to water on my kitchen floor from my leaking dishwasher.  The dishwasher is old.  Got some rust spots in the front, it's loud as hell, the timer is loud as hell (to the point we can't even set the timer if we are going to hang out in the living and watch tv because we just hear CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK).  We've been talking about replacing it, but I keep saying no because even though it's loud and ugly as hell it still works and doesn't leak.  I guess it's time now though.

Don't use the water from the leaking dishwasher in the nasal rinse, either, I suppose.  Sorry, that sucks.

For me, yesterday's work crap continues, and my youngest woke up saying he didn't feel great.  I sent him to school b/c he had no fever, but I told him if he still feels crappy after lunch to have them call me.  So I'm fully expecting to get a call from school and I really don't have time for a sick kid today on top of the existing work crap.  Sigh.

Separate question:  I know someone who uses bottled water in her nasal rinse.  Is that a bad idea, too?  I imagine that should be boiled also?

Bottled water should be safe.  So should RO, and distilled. Not sure about DI.  This is such a rare thing I don't know how much we should really worry about it.  It would suck if happened to you or someone you know, and once you get it death is pretty much a certainty in short order, but I think there has only been something like 400 cases world wide, which seems totally insignificant.
