Couldn't take one more day, gave notice at work
« on: January 25, 2020, 06:10:12 AM »
I've had my resignation letter written since September of this past year and every day, I'd edit it, change the dates, print a fresh copy out and put it on my desk, thinking that would be the day that I'd submit it.  I've been telling friends for months how unhappy I am, exhausted, worn out, burnt out, just plain DONE with my job.  I've been stressing so much about what would happen when I told my boss I'm leaving and most days the thought of that stress kept me from submitting the letter.  After working yet another 60+ hour week, I woke up this morning after a night shift and decided today had to be the day.  I met my friend (former co-worker) for lunch at Chick Fil A and told her that I really need to grow a pair and just do it already.  She agreed to sit at the table with me while I made the call.  I needed the support, my heart was beating fast, I had my notes in front of me and I felt like I was going to throw up.  I called my boss.  He didn't answer.  Not to be deterred, I called his boss.  He answered, and I finally said what's needed to be said for months...I'm resigning, my last day will be in 2 weeks.  He says, "oh...can you submit that to me and your boss in writing?"  That's it?  15 years of slaving away at a place that I poured my soul into?  Not even a "hey, what can we do to keep you?"  Right, so that's how it is.  I guess I know I made the right choice.  Oh...and if you're wondering why my boss didn't answer...he didn't have my number programmed in his phone, so he didn't know who I was...15 years.  Wow.

So...here's to a bit of freedom starting in just under 2 weeks.  I think I'm gonna start a blog, and maybe post more on here.  Kinda still in shock!

I'm guessing from your name that you're set financially. If so, welcome to FIREland! Unless you really, really need to, why bother working out the last two weeks? Just pack up and go.

BTW, big boss may have been caught off guard by your phone call, so I'm not sure how much I'd read into his response. I would make sure he knows why the little boss didn't take your call.

Hi Dicey!  I feel like a celebrity answered my post, LOL.  Love your blog!  I'm super close to FI, about 97% of the way here and close enough that I was willing to take the risk and leave.  I'd love to not work the last 2 weeks, but I really do like my co-workers and don't want them to suddenly have to work 80 hour weeks, so I'm willing to suck it up for a few more shifts.  But after that 2 weeks, I cannot wait to be FREE!!!

Congratulations for finding the courage to give notice. If you should have done this since September, then it was about time to do it. Good for your friend to support you. I hope you enjoy your FIRE. Don't worry about the money. Opportunities might pop up and/or you might spend less than you had planned.

I'm glad that you made the call.  It sounds like a pretty tough work situation.  Hope that you can start to decompress soon.

Congrats on giving notice and on the hard work of saving you've done over the years that made it possible for you to do so!

At nearly FI, you definitely shouldn't be working a job that gives you that much stress.  I hope the bosses will recover from their shock of losing you and take interest in why you are leaving or what they could have done, but if not it's their loss!

While you were working toward FI, did you also have time to think about how you would spend your time should you do the full FIRE?  I hope you have lots of exciting times in front of you (including just some sleep and relaxation!)

I appreciate your diligence in making sure you give a 2 week notice. Organizations generally don't worry too much about people leaving. Work slows down a bit but nothing major happens. Even executives leave. We should think of ourselves more. What is best for us. Then do it

Enjoy your freedom

Congratulations!

I know it stings a bit that they seem to not have valued you as a long time employee... but it isn't about you - it's them. There are SO MANY bad bosses that don't recognize good, hard working employees, and likely this is your situation.

Just another indication that you are breaking free from a place that didn't even appreciate you.

I hope you have a great two weeks there and then are free to go in a direction that gives you much happiness!

Congrats! The next two weeks are going to breeze by now.

Before you’re out the door, glance over the FIRE Checklist, as it has some useful things you might want to do in these last couple weeks:

15 years of slaving away at a place that I poured my soul into?  Not even a "hey, what can we do to keep you?"  Right, so that's how it is.  I guess I know I made the right choice.  Oh...and if you're wondering why my boss didn't answer...he didn't have my number programmed in his phone, so he didn't know who I was...15 years.  Wow.

OP, methinks  the title of Johnny Paycheck's song  is apropos in itself.

So is the lyric  "I been workin' in this factory For nigh on fifteen years."

"Take This Job and Shove It"
Johnny Paycheck

Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was working for
You better not try to stand in my way
'Cause I'm walkin' out the door
Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
I been workin' in this factory
For nigh on fifteen years
All this time I watched my woman
Drownin' in a pool of tears
And I've seen a lot of good folks die
That had a lot of bills to pay
I'd give the shirt right offa' my back
If I had the guts to say
Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was workin' for
You better not try to stand in my way
'Cause I'm walkin' out the door
Take this job and shove it
I ain't workin' here no more
Well that foreman, he's a regular…

Congratulations to you on making it happen. It sounds like the environment was a bit toxic, thank goodness for the colleagues you did enjoy. Maybe have a nice dinner or drinks after your last day to really celebrate with them? Wishing you all the best on your next phase!

I haven't planned out exactly what I'll be doing yet, but I know that I have a trip to Europe to look forward to this summer.  I'm also hoping to volunteer more at the animal shelter, crochet, LOSE 100 POUNDS <---- that will take up a lot of my time...probably cook at home more-more healthy meals, take quick weekend trips, spend quality time with good friends, and have more time with my kids who are just about grown.  I'm sure I'll find myself bored some days, but I know if that happens, I'm happy to try new things.  I'm starting to get sooo excited!

I'm back at work today, working on my succession plan.  Surprisingly, nobody I work with is mad at me!  Thank goodness because a lot of them are good friends.  I've heard all day that I'm brave and they are happy for me and they'll miss me and most of all they UNDERSTAND why I would leave.  I couldn't have asked for a better reaction.  The hard part is that I'm not really telling people what I'm doing and I feel weird about that.  When they ask, "what are you going to do next?"  I want to say...nothing or whatever I feel like doing, gosh!  But I guess I don't really want people to know that I can leave without a job.  The conversations are awkward and not telling them the truth seems to create a wall between us.  Anyway, other than that things are going great and my last shift will be in 8 days!  Thanks for all the congrats!

Congrats.  I remember putting in two weeks notice for a job I hated.  My boss said something to the effect of "I'm supposed to try to talk you into staying, but I'm not gonna bother with that grin on your face."

Take some time and decompress guilt free.

You can be honest and say you're not sure on long term plans, but you want to take some time to decompress before making any serious decisions.  If that decompression takes the next twenty years, well, they don't need to know that!

I wouldn't take it personal or take offense to the bosses reaction. There are definitely companies out there that truly care about their employees; but to most, we're all just numbers on a spreadsheet.

Congratulations on hitting FIRE!

Congratulations!   The next couple of weeks may feel weird at times but a month from now you will think that they flew by.

Hopefully you can manage to take slow time to clear your workspace and put in 6 hours of work in an 8 hour day.  :-)

And -- don't be put off if most of your good friends at work just remain "good friends at work".  Only people that have called you at home now will continue to connect with you in future, or more than a LinkedIn post or annual email, and that is OK.  It lets you start your new life however you want, actually.

Are not many of us in a similar or same boat now? All of us so called "permanent" staff are effectively contractors? Because we know that many employers would shit on us at the drop of a hat, so they get the same kind of loyalty in return.

Nobody is inclined to really commit themselves and really put everything into a job any more because it's repaid with scorn.  Five more years is all I have to survive, then I can step off this hamster wheel and go and do something where I can feel like my actual livelihood is in my own hands.

Yes, I am LITERALLY counting down the hours.  And thinking about how I'm going to sleep in til 6...and have time to go to the gym...and meet up with old ladies to crochet...and actually cook dinner from scratch!  Come onnnnnnn finish line!!!!

Good riddance to that job! It is stressful to leave a long-term job. Good on you for finally pushing through that mental barrier. If you only have 3% left to go to get to FI, go do something fun with your time. There are a lot of *fun* jobs out there, and pay level will not be as big a concern as your stache will somewhat tend to itself if you aren't in RE phase.

Congratulations!  This is huge and I'm happy for you.  Love the technique of having and revising the resignation letter for so long, lets you know you are now headed in the right direction.

This story has made me smile this morning. Congratulations.

For just about the first time I now have a job that I have really like since the day I started (last June) and it is strange to not have that " have to get out of here" refrain in the back of my head all the time. I think everywhere else I have worked, when people have told me they're leaving, I have said congraulations. For some reason that surprises most people. It's nice (for you) that your colleagues understand exactly why you're leaving, even if it's not so nice (for them) to not be able to do the same.

55 more hours of work.  I'm less excited today because one of my co-workers gave me a COLD!  Boo!!!  Things are slow here, my replacement seems to think he knows everything he needs to know to take over, so I spent the morning online joining a book club and crochet club in town, putting a few comedy shows on my calendar and generally just daydreaming of the first day in 15 years that I won't have to set an alarm.

I haven't really told anyone at work where I'm going (nowhere) or what I'm doing (nothing) after I leave this job, but yesterday a friend at work asked what I had lined up.  I reminded him that he had shown me a really interesting website a few years ago (this one!) and it really helped me get on the path I'm taking now.  He smiled and said..."I figured that's what you were doing!"  It was nice to be able to share that with someone that totally understands!

Anyway, I'm plugging along, thanks for the support, can't wait to hit that finish line on Tuesday, woo hoo!  :)

That’s great. Honestly, I’d take the days as sick leave and be done. Contact the people you like for drinks next Friday after work unless they’re doing a big send off for you. Your replacement is trained and you don’t need to be there. Clean out your desk and be done. Be free. Congrats.

I love that story! Buy that person a drink! (Or maybe bring him something homemade.)

Amazing that your replacement has so much confidence. But whatever, if he/she is wrong, it won't be your problem. Good luck with you last week.

See, they are punishing you. I remember going to meetings and slyly relocating away from anyone who appeared to be sick....if possible. I had charge of a dozen workers and I often told them to just stay home when sick, their heroics are not helping.
