I am a nurse in an outpatient procedure area that needs to remain open. So far it's business as usual except we have to take our temperature twice a day, screen patients for symptoms on arrival, and all staff and patients have to wear masks. (Even though we were told a week ago that masks don't help). I am also picking up a little overtime doing phone triage, which thankfully so far for the most part means comforting the worried well.

I am a small business owner. This is my 20th year anniversary of being in business.  I am a hairstylist. There's no distancing yourself with this job. My state had it's first case as of yesterday. I am praying for a state wide lockdown. This way I dont have to make the decision to close up shop.I am fine to shut down and could survive off my emergency fund for a long time. My fear is shutting down  for a long time coming back to no business. I need to close for everyones safety. It's going to very emotional walking away from something you've worked so hard and long to establish.

Any small business owner making this decision is admirable. I'm happy to hear you have a good emergency fund.

I work in a library. We closed yesterday at 3 pm. Staff will return on March 23. No idea when we'll let the public back in.

I put myself on WFH yesterday with two sick kids.  Today they told me to stay home indefinetely and they would give me paid time off as they figured out what the situation for their hardship is with the State department of labor.  I expect to be laid off within two weeks.

My place of employment is still open.  About 15,000 people work on-site at this location. (Yes 15k)

No mention of encouraged wfh yet.  Just a don't come in if you feel sick message.

We'll see how long that tune last.

I work in a homeless shelter, work isn't going anywhere.  Not sure I want it at this point, but it is an essential service.

I run two small businesses. The main one supplies live plants for offices, hospitality, health care and residential clients. Main employee is over 60, takes care of an elderly parent as well as having a couple of grandchildren living in her home. She's been off since last week.  One part timer does floral design and helps out here and there. Home with kids, one of whom is sick. The other part timer is a young guy, furloughed. from his restaurant job and is doing basics for whatever clients are open, many are closed. He's also been organizing/sterilizing the warehouse and our work van. Two new installs are ready and waiting but are on hold, all understood. The business has good cash reserves and clients not paying in April shouldn't be an immediate concern.

Business #2 is home staging, no new projects on the books, two projects currently out in the field. It's income that's not depended upon, but nice.

Rental properties have tenants up to date, but one has informed me April may be a problem.

Overall, just holding tight. What else can you do>

Powers that be have finally decided many departments are going mostly remote starting tomorrow.  I'll be switching off days with our sysadmin so one of us is always here.  Still leaves about 70% of our staff on-site, but we're a service laboratory so that's about all we can do without closing down completely.  Nobody is dragging lab equipment home to run samples.

My wife is working from home and has been for a couple of years. I am in ICU nurse in a Level 1 Trauma center, so I am working as much as they will let me with no cap on overtime and bonus pay as well. For us it’s life as usual. Actually, we are even better off then normal and will get to add a pretty good amount to the stache depending on how long this lasts. We definitely feel fortunate and are making sure to take the time and pay it forward because life sucks for a lot of people right now and we are in a good spot.

My office finally told us all to work from home, starting tomorrow.  About 60% of everybody has already stopped coming in about a week ago, because of schools and daycares closing, or because they are in higher-risk categories.

I didn't feel I was in much danger there, as there were so few around to touch anything or get close to me.  But I do feel relieved to be able to stay home.

I'm a veterinarian. My company has made some modifications, but not enough for me to feel comfortable. I have asthma, so working in close quarters with my team AND seeing 20-25 clients/day is just too risky for me.

I'm currently using some PTO that I had available. My company just decided to give an additional 2 wks of sick leave for anyone with COVID-19 symptoms, or a need for quarantine, or anyone who is determined to be at high risk. So I'll use that next. After that, I'm planning to go on unpaid leave.

I have plenty of freelance work and a healthy emergency fund, so I'm not all that concerned about finances. More concerned about whether I'll be comfortable heading back to work in 12 weeks and, if not, will I lose my health insurance coverage and need to go on COBRA?

startingsmall: in case you would like a starting point for suggesting best practice the below is what I received from the vet practice I use.  When I went in last week they had hand sanitiser on the reception desk for clients.  I understand that the virus can live on pet fur for a while.

Our team is here to provide an important veterinary service to our clients. Should you and your pet need us during the Coronavirus pandemic, we’ve prepared some helpful guidelines.

Please contact us the day before your appointment on: Tel: [redacted]. We will then contact you by telephone on the day of your appointment to ask you questions about self- isolation/ any health concerns.
If you need to visit us to collect food or repeat medications, please call us first.
It may be appropriate to arrange a telephone consult with one of our vets. Our telephone consultations are available by appointment. Payment is easy and can be arranged over the phone when booking your appointment.
You may be advised that your pet needs to be examined at the surgery following the telephone consultation.
If you are self-isolating we will ask you to arrange for someone else to bring your pet to the surgery. The veterinary surgeon will be happy to speak to you by telephone before and after the consultation.
To protect you and our veterinary team, we ask that you also call us on arrival so that we can ask you some questions before entering. You may be asked to remain outside whilst your pet is examined and treated.
We’d be grateful if you keep to one person per pet when visiting our practice and help us by sanitising your hands on entry and when leaving.

We take the well-being of our clients, their pets and our practice colleagues seriously and thank you for your co-operation and understanding at this time.

We will keep you updated.

Kind regards
Your veterinary team

We have told everyone to wfh.

Anybody who needs to do some work in the office for any reason needs to put on a face mask and disposable gloves that we have left in reception, and dispose of them on their way out of the office. In this way we hope to keep surfaces inside the office virus free to protect everyone.

We are encouraging everyone to stay at home as much as possible and to contribute to the government’s social distancing efforts, but recognise that there will be a need for some people to visit the office from time to time.

On the side, I'm trying to figure out how I'm supposed to teach a lab class online for the next while.
We're handling that here by filming the teacher performing the lab so students can see it online and sending the data so they can analyze it for a write-up. Not ideal but way better than nothing.

Unfortunately, I work for a corporation and therefore have very little ability to suggest changes. Trust me, I've tried.... I talked to my boss, my boss's boss, and even to the head vet over the company! They all seemed relatively concerned, but it sounds like there's a bit of a disagreement between the medical side and the operations/money side.

I'm a health professional and my clinic closed after my last shift on Friday the 13th and I was suddenly out of work.

It's no big deal for me though as I had given my notice 6 weeks before. My contractual notice length is a gruelling 4 months, so I'm perfectly fine with getting out early.

I am finally being told or office will be close Saturday and we should work from home on that day, but we will have to wait until Sunday to see if the office will be open again come Monday morning. Other staff have told me that our VPN is not working well for WFH and it takes an extra 2 hours to get a day's work done.

I just finished reading this article, which seems fitting for this discussion:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/fearful-doctors-and-nurses-at-walk-in-clinics-have-a-message-for-patients-stay-away/2020/03/20/710c194c-6a1c-11ea-9923-57073adce27c_story.html

Meanwhile, my veterinary employer is working to make things safer for employees while still running business as usual, by using lots of PPE that should probably be diverted to human medical providers.

We have finally moved people who can to WFH (which doesn't affect me since I'm already remote) but since we have been designated essential we'll be operating as well as we can. People who have to physically be at work are still coming in, but they are taking measures to spread people out.

I work in healthcare, so must go to work. I work treating cancer, and while Covid is happening, cancer marches on. We must treat patients. It does make me nervous because I see 20 patients a day, often sick, with underlying problems. I work with colleagues who are also see others in close quarters. We are preparing for the worst where people at work start getting quarantined, and a job that 2 or 3 people do will now be one person only. It's going to be tough, and I don't see any way out of this for at least 12 months. I keep telling myself at least I have a job with a stable paycheck. I can't imagine what others are going through who have lost jobs and no income in site.

I am wfh, and really have been since I started my current job ('05). Now I'm tasked with getting the rest of my team to wfh and to digitize things that used to be paper-based. My boss is really only happy if in a wfh situation  (for all of us) if we can still have face-to-face meetings, so I've set up Cisco webex meetings where he can "see' everyone. Cisco offers a free account for individual users that has been really useful for us as a team. Made a world of difference, and made him happy

Haha healthcare worker (LPN).  Working like a mofo as my management compatriots are being paid to stay home.  I am vital (like toilet paper) but not important (like toilet paper).  I am quarantined when I come home as my wife won't come near me for fear of catching any bugs as I work with developmentally disabled folks who cough and spit on me constantly because they don't know any better.  Honestly, I love those guys.  One of our nurses had second derivative exposure to covid but asymptomatic so good to go.  Get the feeling "essential staff" means untouchable caste while "non essential" staff get to stay home and eat Doritos while the rest of us try to keep our units open and functioning.  No shit was looking to FIRE on my 20th anniversary as a NY state employee 03/23/2020, but, I just can't leave these people in the lurch.  F-ing miserable drowning in overtime.  This too shall pass.  Seriously though the best gift of working with my population is the appreciation that I really do have a wonderful life.  10+ years ago I became acutely aware that I would be treated like garbage by my employer and the world unless I did something about it.  From then on 50+% of what I earned went in the bank/investments.  Now I have F/U money big time.  I will be saying F/U soon btw.  I just don't like the optics of saying F/U in the middle of this "crisis?".

Sorry everyone, I just came off of yet another shift of being mandated and I was super pissed off.  I should not have posted the above post.  Came home to find my toothbrush and flosser has been quarantined by my SO who is AWESOME btw.  I have just had the shit mandated out of me for years and now all of the sudden it is like "we are in crisis." and it is like wtf... Be safe out there everybody.

Essential personnel at a major hospital in California. We have stopped non-essential operations and trying to get through the remaining cancer cases in the next two weeks. Clinics shut down, ER is a ghost town (turns out no one wants to come for the sniffles when there’s a pandemic forming) and we are at half capacity. We’re all just waiting for the tsunami. My wife’s clinic is closed. One of us needs to not get this virus to take care of our son.

Also essential personnel (telecom), my work times are unchanged but we are sanitizing between shifts and the building is shut down except for us and the site superintendent.
Working from home is allowed if we had training/administration time scheduled, but all training has been canceled so that effectively means that we log into the VPN and sit there for 8 hours to be "available" on the group chat.

Where I work we were given the option of WFH for a very brief period.  That only lasted a few days until it became a Mandatory WFH.  This applies to anyone who can WFH - which includes me and most of my co-workers.  There are some other roles (manufacturing) that require onsite presence to so their job.

I am in the healthcare products industry.  With so many hospitals cancelling all Elective Medical Procedures, it will not take long AT ALL for revenue at our place to take a real hit.  From there, I fully expect some sort of impact on employment (layoffs, furlough, reduced pay - something).

I am an attorney for a global law firm. My office has been shuttered for two weeks already because one attorney was an early positive. No kids so WFH has been quite manageable (and enjoyable on several levels). We will remain WFH for the indefinite future. A big thank you to all "essential" Mustachians who continue to operate critical hospitals, doctors' offices, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.

Deployed military. The base has shut down basically everything but the dining facility (i.e. gym, any morale, welfare, recreation facilities, etc.) and even there they've removed 2/3 of the chairs so people sit at least 6 feet apart. There's also people making sure everyone is standing far enough apart as they line up to wash their hands and go inside.

I'm still going into my office and planning for my next mission but it's looking like a ghost town around here. Very few people out, most are hunkered down in their rooms.

Our meeting every other week with 30-40 people was turned into a conference call - so that was a plus. It also lasted just an hour instead of 1.5-2 like it can sometimes be.

It went in stages, but now WFH is mandatory.  There are exceptions for certain times/events, including something next week for which I'm currently scheduled to travel across the country.  I'm really hoping to avoid that, due to the possibility of being stuck across the country from my family.

DW is also full-time WFH.  The real challenge is that we are supposed to be full-time schooling our elementary-aged kids from home...while working.  Nevertheless, lucky to be in a situation where my job and income are secure.  DW's job is more tenuous - they wouldn't ever lay her off, but the company could potentially go under if there is a protracted lockdown.

I managed to get my travel canceled.  Still going to have to go to work for a couple of days next week for 'essential' tasks, but otherwise sticking at home full-time.  School now out until at least May...and I'm not fooling myself into counting on the kids going back then.

We're in Italy (not Lombardia or Veneto) so have been dealing with a complete lockdown for 9 days now.  My husband runs a small business in tourism so he has been completely out of work for around a week.  He's home with us supervising the kids' homeschooling.  Luckily for us, I'm able to continue working for the same salary full time from home.  We're not allowed to leave the apartment (except for groceries, medicine or (if we had a dog) walking a dog within 200 meters from our apartment.

I just feel really lucky that I can continue to work from home.  So many people we know have lost their entire income as our town is heavily dependent on tourism.

I've been working from home for the past 12 years or so, only difference is much fewer hours over the past year or so than in the past, so haven't been as stuck at home and have had to find other things to do.  I generally eat at home and definitely don't like to go to stores to shop.  I do like to get outside, both in my backyard and our state forests.  I run with my daughter and play baseball and basketball with sons.  My wife and I like to spend time on the porch and lately been watching some shows. I've got about 15 years of tv to catch up on.

I just had a discussion with a friend that pretty much lives and works the same that we're coming to the realization we've been almost self-quarantining for the last 15 years ;-)  We generally have our family over to their house or vice-versa once a week or so, and I generally take my wife out to a dinner about once a week.  That's what I guess I'll be missing.  I am definitely used to being mostly home alone 9a to 3p and thats what has significantly changed for me.  This would be a big stressor on my work under normal situations, but I'm so far ahead of everyone else in being used to this style of working I dont worry about things like kids in the background on client calls or not being 100% efficient with my time right now.

I do feel for the kids, not going to school and their activities with friends is quite the shock for them.

I'm a corporate accountant in a "non life-sustaining" business in PA, we were all mandated to work remotely at the end of the week, but I'd been home since Tuesday the 17th already.  The retail locations were closed over the weekend, so I expect that my job will be super boring this coming week.  I'm expecting a layoff or temporary move to part time.

DH is in IT for a bank, he started working remotely on Monday without permission.  His job is just as easy at home and his boss has not complained.  He's in a higher risk group, I have a cough that I hope is not corona.  We'll see how this goes.

My mother is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.  From us to you, we appreciate it so much that cancer treatment can continue!

Was asked to work from the office but really all of my work can be done at home so that’s what I’m doing.  No way am I going to expose myself unnecessarily and leave my husband to deal with homeschooling the kids by himself if I don’t have to.  This is the silver lining for me- I’ve been telling my boss for 2 years that I want to wfh 3 days per week but he doesn’t believe I can ‘maintain relationships’ from home so. Is I get to prove him wrong. I love working from home and want to continue after Covid-19 calms down.  All I need now is to order another WiFi booster- as the first order was stolen off my porch yesterday 🤦‍♀️.

Being in media, I am essential, and still working in a newsroom.

But when the advertising dries up because all the other businesses are closed... who knows.

If more construction sites keep closing down we may need to close our doors.

We have alternating staff who can WFH and come into the office. I am one of the few that are scheduled to be in the office M-F.

Until the inevitable happens, I'll just keep coming in until they say not to.

Been work from home for 6 years with most of my company. We sell protein powder and supplements online and business has been booming since lockdowns started. So everything is just business as usual here. Honestly though I was trying to architect a layoff to put me over the top on FIRE before this started and now I'm not sure I'll be able to anytime soon. It's weird to be in the opposite situation of wanting to be laid off and it not being an option when everyone else around me is getting laid off.

I am a Registered Nurse whose unit has been assigned as the designated COVID19 r/o floor. Surprisingly, census isn't as high as we thought it was going to be and many units (including the surgical wards) have been shut down. A lot of other staff are complaining about having to use vacation time due to low census, but not my floor. I have perhaps the most secure job, but it has been a shit show.

My boyfriend, a corporate controller, has been working from home. He is loving it.

I work in crisis mental health so we're essential. My employer is trying to get us to work remotely with the contracted site I'm at, but they are pushing back pretty hard. On the one hand I'm thankful to have a job. On the other hand, I'm frustrated that I'm being placed at higher risk of being exposed to this virus when my company has offered the contracted site numerous ways to minimize risk (i.e. telehealth, cut down on hours, etc.)

After being told to WFH for one day, everyone is back to office. Company owner "spent time this morning wiping all the common areas with Clorox wipes, including the phones in the common areas" yesterday, so I guess we are all safe /s.

We have been told we can work from home if we want, "but there will still need to be trips into the office to print returns, pick up more work, etc." so I may as well just work from my office with the door closed and avoid everyone at all costs and assume every surface outside my office is infected.

After a Michigan order to stay home and close all non essential businesses we are apparently carrying on as usual.  Owner is probably coming back from Florida spring break and I'm guessing not gonna quarantine.

Not sure if they are just desperately holding out hope for a few more hours, despite the order being announced several hours ago, or they legitimately think they're essential and we can carry on.

We do surface finishing on aerospace parts. Maybe that's essential? It's also for sure going to lead to an outbreak in the facility of 85 people so...

I live in Germany. Been working from home this past week-and-a-half. I'm really lucky - both my employer and our clients are in IT and so far it's been business as usual, except that everyone's working from home. My heart goes out to anyone that doesn't have this option.

Bit worried about older relatives. We've had a few scares in the family but so far nothing life-threatening and probably no covid-19 (hard to tell with the lack of testing).

Yesterday the government banned gatherings of more than two people.

You could always put in an anonymous call to the state labor department. I feel like I wouldn’t mind seeing your boss get slapped with a misdemeanor and fine.

Just under a week mandatory WFH - but it was a fight to get here.  Management doesn't believe anyone can possibly accomplish anything from home even though my entire job can be done remotely.

No knowledge on when we'll go back.  Loving the WFH the longer it goes on and the more I assume management understands that work is possible and they don't need to send emails just to make sure folks respond...

We did get a screaming email from our IT director about not using Slack as it wasn't approved so they added everyone to a WebEx Team account that I think no one has logged into.  As far as I can tell, folks are only posting pet photos on Slack... so... HUGE security concern.

Well, not only am I WFH (as usual) but now my wife's teaching moved online and daycare is closed. So now we're going to all hang out here and juggle who takes care of the kid...
