Considering career move
« on: May 20, 2015, 01:48:12 PM »
Having a hard time with a decision. I had an interview earlier with a company wanting me to go work for them. I do industrial work all over the country. I currently have a lot of work with my current company. Good job security. Prior to this I only did contract work and was never unemployed. This would be a contract position lasting from 7 months, and potentially years if the price of oil comes back up... I'm 27, so in a position to take risk.

Current job - take home about 2150/wk. They match 10% of my 401k contributions. I.e. I do $100, they do $100.

New job - would take home 2900/wk, and they match dollar for dollar to 10%, and 50 cents on the dollar for the next 5% I contribute.

I'm just having a tough time taking the leap. I am often annoyed in my current job, but it pays reasonable and job security is nice.

I know this would be a great experience, it's just a risk of something not working out for whatever reason.

Advice?

You have a couple of things to weigh that we can't weigh for you.  I will caution that you will almost certainly be "annoyed" at times with every job you ever have.  "Annoyed" sounds pretty mild, so I wouldn't use that as the reason to jump ship.

It sounds like they are offering you substantially more money (I'm guessing ~$25k/year + based on the numbers you gave, although other benefits of each position are important to consider).  At your age, if you feel like you have skills that are in enough demand that losing some job security isn't a huge deal, I'd be inclined to make that move.  I will say though that I tend to be pretty risk tolerant when it comes to making employment moves, as I have a skill set that tends to land me job offers pretty easily.

Another thought if it's mostly the money you are after is to go tell your current employer you have an offer on the table and see if they will match it.  People seem hesitant to do this, but it often works out in your favor.

Good luck!!

Ben

Thanks for the input! In lieu of being a complained, "annoyed" was quite  an understatement lol.

I accepted the position. Although contract, it'll pay $50k+ more than my current job. I plan to just bank the difference. I'm 27 so working hard to ER!
