Companies that support telecommuting
« on: July 16, 2014, 09:27:30 PM »
Hi everyone,
I am curious if anyone on the list knows of businesses or other organization that regularly hire telecommuting or virtual employees for full-time professional positions. Thanks!

The federal government uses telework pretty extensively.  While I know of a few in my agency who do so full-time (i.e., 5 days/week), most generally telecommute 3 days/week.

Most people who telework turned their regular jobs into such an arrangement after they've proven themselves.  There's a great section on this in the book 4 Hour Work Week.

I work for a global tech company not based in Silicon Valley and we have an enormous telecommuting workforce.  Officially I'm not a telecommuter as I am assigned to an office.  But my team is all over the US and my manager doesn't care where I work as long as I go into the office ocassionally to take care of non-telecommuting tasks.  So I'm pretty much 75% home/25% office.  The only downside to this flexibility is that I can't charge for supplies for my home office as I technically should be using office resources.

Several of the larger health insurance companies support telecommuting to some degree.  At my last company, I telecommuted about 3 days a week.  Now, my entire team is 100% remote.

I don't know what kind of work you are looking for but Originull Networks http://originullnetworks.com/  an IT networking firm hires many remote workers.

This doesn't really address the original question, but the two jobs that seem to allow telecommuting more than others are software development and sales.

My back hurts from bringing in a FREE beautiful oak china cabinet the neighbors left behind in their apartment because they were too lazy to move it. I don't have any china to put in it but the DW has a collection of cool antique bottles that she has had for years (worth several thousand dollars.)

Well, if you're not strictly a coder then you could still think about being a WordPress Happiness Engineer:

The WireCutter.com is always looking for product review experts:
http://thewirecutter.com/jobs/ , scroll down to the "Table of Contents" section.

The Veterans Administration also has telecommuting jobs, but I suspect that those are mostly internal hires.  Another option would be searching USAJobs.gov for the "telecommute" keyword.

Finally, there are tons of websites that hire virtual assistants.  Here's one that goes for more long-term projects:

This could get you started with a short client list that would eventually make it easier to build your resume for freelancing on your own.

Hi Nords,
Thanks very much. Can you (or others) think of sites for technical-type writers?
