Commuting alternatives
« on: December 04, 2014, 06:16:27 PM »
We like to assume that there are many people on the forum who bike. However, there are always a lot of people who say they can't because of the number of major roads, the distance involved... and most of them seem to say that they use a car.

I wondered what the ratios were, and what other methods of commuting there are in the forum. For example, my brother lives in a neighbourhood with very busy roads, and doesn't bike because it would be too dangerous. However, he rollerblades everywhere instead (when their children were little, he wore out the wheels on the pram by because it had done so many kilometres of rollerblading).

The modes of transport are organised as powered (self), powered (mass transport), unpowered.

I work from home now, but back when I used to have to commute into an office, I rode my motorcycle as much as I could. Around 50 MPG, could easily get 200 miles on a single tank.

Drive my wife and I to the metro together, then walk to the office.

Yeah, you left telecommute off the list.

Yeah, you left telecommute off the list.

I assumed commuting to be any travel from one location to another, not just for work.  Do you not buy groceries?  :P

I understand that this might seem semantic, but could you add "carpool" as an option?  It is a little different from just driving.  I love that this lets you pick up to five!

I either carpool with my wife and toddler (we all work/daycare in an eight block radius) or walk with them, if the weather is nice.  It's a sweet deal!

Bunny slipper commute! I work from home, but I bike too and from my son's daycare each day. Sometimes my husband does drop off and pick up though.

I telecommute for work.  Mostly walk (occasionally bike) to town and the public library.  Use the car for groceries or errands like doctor's visits that are about 1-2 miles away, and for vacations.  I try to drive my car once a week so the battery doesn't die.

Seven minute walk to the metro.  From there, either seven min bus ride and five minute walk to work or a five minute train ride and 7 min walk to work.

I often walk home in the summer.   I take a longer route walking than driving to avoid multilane high traffic streets, highway exits, and disappearing sidewalks. It takes me about 45-50 minutes, but most of the walk is on quiet neighborhood streets and bike paths.

I bike spring, summer, and fall, but am currently too wussypants to bike in winter so I take the bus. It's subsidized by my job though :-)

I drive 50 miles one way.   A thorn in my side but the alternative is living in the POS San Fernando Valley and not being able to surf

I usually bike, but drive in bad weather.  Sometimes my husband will drop me off and pick me up.  Or I'll bike to work, and he'll pick me up after.

I usually walk 55 minutes to and from work, sometimes get the bus or train and ticked cycle though my bike needs repaired at the minute so probably won't use it til Spring.

My commute varies from week to week.  In order, my most common commutes this year as percent of days were:

1)Work from home 50%
2)Public Transit, Bus and/or train, within my metro area 30%
3)Uber + Airplane + walk from hotel 20%

I either bike or walk.  I live about 1.5 miles from work.  If I want to get extra exercise, I walk the 45 minutes route as opposed to the 20 minute route.

I love the "swim" option.  Perhaps biking in the rainy PNW counts as swimming?

I picked car as that's all I'm commuting with now, but when I was in college I would bike, rollerblade, or walk every day.

Thanks for adding carpool!  I can't change my vote (the option comes and goes for me), but I'll keep trying!
