closing out/reopening credit cards
« on: December 08, 2016, 09:40:46 AM »
I suppose I am not planning to super churn but what does the process look like to close AND reopen cards?

For instance I have 2 chase cards... One was opened in June, one in Sept.     Would a churning process look like this?

Open card (eg Chase Saphire Reserve)
Complete requirments to get bonuses
Shift points from card that will be closed
Close card
Ensure that you haven't had more than 5 cards in the past 24 months (Chase restriction)
Apply for new Chase Saphire Reserve card  (min x months from when card was opened, min Y months from when the card was closed)

For the above process is there a real X or Y?

Is this different for different card companies?  What is your experience?

Yeah Chase has a 24 month period to get the bonus again.
I did this with the Marriott card. I openned one a long time ago and got 50K points. Cancelled.
More than 24 months later, I got offered a 80K sign up bonus. Checked to see if its been more than 24 months. Yep !!.
Re-signed and got my 80K after spending the require money. Just cancelled the card again.
Hope that answered your question.

Yep, different for different credit card companies.  Be sure to read offer v-e-r-y carefully.  If you're going to get into this try reading a website that sspecializes in points (frugaltravelguy.com and thepointsguy.com are ones I read).  Look at their Newbie guide and read postings on an on-going basis.

If you have points remaining, understand what will happen to them when you close credit card.  As a general rule hotel and airline points reside with the hotel/airline and won't be affected by closing the card.  TYP/UR and similar are with the credit card company and will disappear if you don't do something with them.  Again make sure you understand all the ins and outs.  For example, if you transfer UR points from a CSR account to a lower level account they will be worth less when redeeming.  On UR cards with no annual fee (e.g., Freedom) you lose the ability to transfer the UR to your spouse or partner airlines.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
