Clip on sunglasses
« on: February 12, 2014, 07:28:38 PM »
Hi,
I was not sure where to post this so please relocate if inappropriate. I am in need of some clip on sunglasses for a pair of prescription glasses* that I bought. I am eager to avoid buying a separate pair of prescription sunglasses. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not make clip ons for these frames.** The frames are Perry Ellis model # 135882 FMM 54. I looked on Amazon but was unable to tell if the clip on models sold there might fit. Costco –who sells the frames- had no recommendations. Does anyone have any ideas on where to obtain the clip ons or how to size these things? Thanks!

*Transition lenses are not sufficient for my blue eyes.
**For a variety of reasons buying a different set of frames is a poor option.

I wear big glasses designed to fit completely over prescription glasses, and the work very well for me (I guess one has to be unconcerned about appearance, or big glasses have to be in style).

They look sort of like this, though mine didn't cost that much ($13, then I found a second pair at a thrift store): http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/solar-shield-fits-over-classic-polarized-plastic-sunglasses-size-l/ID=prod2875476-product

I know you said you don't want to buy new glasses, but I can't help you with finding clip-ons to fit a specific frame.   These are my new favorite pair of glasses from Zenni, and I have many others.   The sunshades have little magnets and the frames have little metal circles for the magnets to attach to, so the sunshades just stick on.. very cool.  $29.95 includes the polarized clip-ons.  I bought an extra for $5.95.

I got custom clip on glasses from a company similar to this:

http://www.yelp.com/biz/e-clips-custom-clip-on-sunglasses-richmond

Basically, you drop your glasses off there for an hour or so, the technician measures and cuts sunglasses to fit and attaches clips to make it work specifically for your glasses. I got mine at some mall while on vacation in California I think (or was it Florida?) for 45 dollars. I thought it was pricey at the time, but it certainly has worked out well during sunset driving!

Will it just be for driving? If so, go the no-fail route of the giant clip-on aviator shades.

I have two pairs myself but only because the last time I updated my glasses was during a BOGO sale. Also, I find clip-ons much more annoying than having a second pair, even when they're a custom-fit for the specific frame.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. I will be using these on nature walks and cycle commuting. What do you find annoying about clip ons?

The optical department at The Evil Empire (WalMart) might have a good selection of clip-ons.
