We sweep the bulk of the hair into a dustpan and then vacuum the area to get the last of the stray hairs.

Do it outside! That's what we do when I cut my husband's hair. Especially if he goes directly to the shower afterward, cutting hair outside eliminates virtually all of the mess.

This is what I do too.

It depends what room you are in. In the kitchen (big room), I would sweep it up with the broom and dustpan and put it in the wastebasket, then use the hard-floor vacuum if I felt like I needed to. In the bathroom (little room), if you are over the sink at all, lay paper towels across the sink and vanity, and then just wad the hair up in the paper towel and throw in wastebasket. Use a damp paper towel to get any strays. Pick up the worst of it on the floor with your hand or a combination of your hands and damp paper towel, and throw in wastebasket. Possibly use the hard-floor vacuum or a handvac if you still have hairs all over the place on the floor. Very easy-peasy, doesn't take any time.

Do it outside.  If it's winter, do it in the garage.  I never do it in kitchen....too many tiny little hairs flying all over the place that will eventually end up in food.

If we aren't quick enough sweeping up the bits of hair, my beagle will swoop in and eat them.  Dogs are weird.

Why would there be a problem with a vacuum? I could see if you had really long hair (wrap around beater bar), but that is easy to contain / clear.
I just cut my hair yesterday with a scissors. Plastic grocery bag in sink, cut using bathroom mirror. Most of the cutoff hair is in my hand and so I drop it in the bag. Some falls onto me, clothes, and floor.
If it is a lot, I'd sweep up what I could, then vacuum. For clothes take the shirt outside and shake it out.

A garbage bag can help. Take a large one and cut it at the seams on one side to make it a single piece (and cover more area).

I do my own over the sink (but try to get the clippings to fall directly into a wastebasket from my head). Most of what misses falls on the garbage bag, which covers the sink. I manage to get most of the "miss" into the wastebasket (you can do this outside), then take the garbage bag outside and shake it. Then I reuse the garbage bag each time.

Put down an old sheet to cover the area then take it outside and shake it out. You can wash it to get the rest out or just use it again for the next haircut.

Sweep it up and feed it to the worms. They seem to like it.

If  inside, I start by covering the floor with a sheet of newspaper. It doesn't need to be large, just enough to catch most of the hair.

I then vacuum what's left, usually not much at all. My wife's hair gets stuck around the vacuum head even though we don't cut her hair at home, just from natural shedding, so I have to clean the head regularly anyway.

I do my DH and DS's hair in our tiled bathroom. They hop straight into the shower afterwards. I just keep a broom and dustpan handy for cleanup - and never have a problem with stray hairs? There might be one or two in a corner somewhere but that's picked up in the next sweep. We only take out our vacuum for our cars now as we got rid of all the carpets in the house - so our only tool is a decent broom.

My SIL used to mess with newspapers - but it literally takes me 5 seconds to sweep it up that I can't be bothered.

What I do want to get is one of those plastic capes for their bodies. Right now I wrap them in a cheap bedsheet (hair doesn't stick much to the cheap ones) and clip it together. for my DS, I actually use his old fitted cribsheet!! I shake it off (to sweep up) and then throw it into the wash. I'm thinking the plastic kind might be easier - a quick shake and fold up until the next session. Not sure if I can stomach paying for a piece of plastic though....

I get a big plastic bag and cut my hair into it at my bathroom counter, then I wipe the counter to make sure there's no stray hair.  Then I feed my hair to my veggie garden, it's nitrogen, right?!  :-D

I bought a $1 plastic shower curtain liner for Mr. SP's haircuts.  Sit him in a chair on top, and just gather it up when done and shake it outside.  The liners last for a couple of years before they get torn and need replacing.  I keep old towels, and he puts one around his neck to keep the hair off.  In the summer, I cut his on the deck, and just sweep it off.

For myself, I save the big plastic envelopes that toilet paper comes in.  Cut it open into a sheet, cover the sink area, and cut away.  When I'm done, fold it up, throw away.  Only a little hair gets on the floor, and it's easy to wipe up.

This. Are the rest of y'all doing an elaborate dance while cutting hair and thus getting it everywhere? Mine just falls on the floor when my wife cuts it, I hope in the shower after, then sweep up the remains with a broom. Done!

In the bathroom, sweep up excess and don't worry about the few stray hairs but try to do it shortly before bathroom is ready for its bi-weekly cleaning anyways.  Or do it outside.  But we only cut the guy's hair at home so its relatively short.

I cut my hair over the bathroom sink with a plug in it, and then just "sweep" the sink with a wet hand afterward. The hair goes into the compost pail, or if I'm having trouble with critters in the garden, I sprinkle it around my greens (mammals don't like the human smell, slugs don't like the scratchiness). Then I rinse the last few (short) hairs down the drain.

I cut hubs hair outside if weather allows.

If its inside we use a towel over the chair and then sweep up the hair. I think either use a paper towel or two and dampen them to get up any other loose hairs that weren't picked up by the broom.

Then hubs take towel outside (no matter the weather) and shakes that out.

Saving money on haircuts since 2012.

I shaved my own, no plastic guard. Newspaper over the sink, at the end I wad up the paper and throw it in the compost.

This is what you need!

In all seriousness I use a dustpan & vacuum for hair cleanup after a trim and it does the job.

Like many others: we do it outside.  Me and both dogs.  Sweep it up and toss it over the fence so birds can use it as nesting material.

Do you outsiders cut your hair in all weathers? I suppose you wouldn't cut it in the rain, but what about a winter day with several inches of snow on the ground?

We do it on a back porch.  Rain is okay.  And I live in the south.   An extremely cold day is 20F.  It is doable.  If not: garage.

We have yes. Although I prefer to cut indoors as I can get cold very easily.
We've used the garage too but that is just as cold, although its blocked from the wind.

Usually we do haircuts indoors, neither my husband or I like to be on display while cutting hair and the way our yard is set up we are seen by the neighbor guy who is always outside. So we do it indoors.

Interesting thread. I have to cut mine in the bathroom to be able to use the mirror. When I used to cut my husband's, I did it in the kitchen to have enough room to move around and for easy clean up. There was never a problem with little hairs flying around--the broom, dustpan, and vacuum did the trick.

When I was growing up, my mother usually cut my hair on the front porch so she could easily sweep the hair off into the bushes. I hated having to stand perfectly still for approximately eternity, plus I got some interesting haircuts whenever she decided my long hair and bangs needed a trim on a windy day. I now prefer indoor haircuts even if a couple of minutes of vacuuming are required.

We're in the "bathroom then shower" bandwagon. Set up a stool, cut DH's hair. I have him hold a little waste bin and drop the extra hair into it as I go. He has thick hair, so this is pretty easy- it holds together fairly well. Very little on the floor. Quick sweep and he hops in the shower. If it seems like extra is around, we wet a paper towel and wipe up the little strays.

The Remington HKVAC2000A has a built-in vacuum:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OLV3UN8/

It does a surprisingly good job of vacuuming up all the hair as I'm cutting.  The main negatives:
  • It's not built very well.  I had to return my first unit for a replacement.
  • Because I have thick hair, it takes a long time to cut with the Remington.  I have to stop cutting and empty the chamber 2-3 times.
It's nice that I can cut my hair almost anywhere (even in a motel room) without leaving any mess.

This is BRILLIANT - I do not know why I never thought of a plastic shower curtain. And here I am considering buying one of those plastic capes. Right now I use an old bedsheet but the plastic shower curtain will shake off so much easier! I'll just keep a hairclip close by to clip it at the shoulder and I'll be set! Time to hit the dollar store.

The hair goes into the compost pail, or if I'm having trouble with critters in the garden, I sprinkle it around my greens (mammals don't like the human smell, slugs don't like the scratchiness). Then I rinse the last few (short) hairs down the drain.

Ooo...going to have to try this one. Some critters got at our zucchini plant last week. BOTH my boys AND my dog need a haircut.

My wife has been cutting my hair for years, 'outdoors'
She covers me with a black plastic cover.
First time, I ask her where she found all that grey hair?
Darn'ed if it wasn't mine.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
